This moody grey is the colour of storm clouds, the stormy ocean

Combine with ivory and cherry red, with touches of deep chocolate

– With golden yellow and slate blue and pearl grey

– With slate blue and pale blue and ivory

– With teal, bright blue and paler grey

– With coral and slate blue and cream

– With natural stone colours

– With robin’s egg blue (see our Creative Colour – Duck Egg Blue), sage (grey) green and pale grey

– With plum, lavender and mid grey

– With beige, robin’s egg blue, ‘bronzey’ brown and touches of black

– With royal blue and mid grey

– With rose pinks of many hues and ivory

– When using this colour think texture and shine. Use silks, satins, velvets, wools, things that are sparkly and things that have a soft lustre such as pewter itself, to add interest to a colour that could quickly become overwhelming and forceful

– Add softer elements such as fully opened roses or peonies, clouds of gypsophila, white hydrangeas, sugar frosted fruit, and subtle accents such as perfumed flowers tucked away in corners, soft unobtrusive lighting

– Succulents,

– Old zinc or tin troughs, brushed aluminium containers, black ceramic candlesticks, silver ice buckets, old wire birdcages, Lucite, old pewter containers

– Pewter grey crystal beaded runner over a lavender tablecloth, lavender and plum blossoms, pewter and plum coloured crockery, plum coloured napkins, brushed stainless steel cutlery, lavender invitations with pewter design work, pewter lustred favour boxes tied with lavender ribbon

– Trays of wheat grass in zinc tubs on pale grey tablecloths, pale grey or green candles grouped, napkins tied with a grey/green patterned ribbon and fastened with a teardrop crystal, green and clear mixed glassware, glass plates, charcoal grey suits for the men, pale grey dresses for the bridesmaids with green sashes, green shoes

– Hurricane lamps, lanterns, hand forged wrought iron candelabra – either free standing or table sized, bell jars

– Pewter grey linen, silver candelabra, rose pink napkins piped in grey, pale grey crockery, glasses edged in silver, paler rose coloured roses or peonies, candles in deep and mid rose and grey, vintage silver ice buckets, tureens etc used as vases, silver cutlery, old silvered mirrors, old lanterns on stands lining a pathway, rhinestones on shoes, clasp or headpiece, a soft pink dress for the bride, rose pink for the maids

– For a new take on a nautical theme, consider striped fabric in pewter grey and white (try finding ‘ticking’ fabric, or even a wider stripe) and add touches of other colour from your chosen palette. The striped fabric could be used as table cloths, tented around the walls and ceiling, repeated in pocket handkerchiefs and ties for the men, in ribbons around the bouquets or tying up napkins or favour boxes
