Ellen and Simon

There is so much heartfelt beauty in today’s wedding. A wedding planner in the USA recently told me Australians have a very distinctive style when it comes to weddings. I think today’s wedding is a beautiful representation of that!

Ellen and Simon met while studying at the Australian National University, after dating for two and half year ,a  trip to Europe was the perfect occasion for a Paris proposal.

Ellen and Simon married on Ellen’s mother’s farm outside Berry in new South Wales. The farm was a special place for Ellen – it was where she was born and where she was raised.

The couple wanted a 1930’s feel to their wedding day with a contemporary edge. Many facets of the day were handmade (including the stationery, all made by Ellen).

All of the floral arrangements were created by Deny Christian. Ellen wanted garden roses, not the glasshouse variety and Deny used old fashioned varieties including David Austin roses and Honey Dijon roses. Simon’s suit was bespoke by Joe Black. He wore a Declic white shirt and a tie from Aya Kawa. The groomsmen wore their own suits.

Ellen who now owns her own couture design business Lissom Yarn ( lissom.yarn at gmail.com ) made her own wedding dress. She says “My dress was made in three layers; a bra and petticoat, a cream silk satin bias-cut slip and then a dusky-pink silk georgette over-dress that had pearl buttons, and a chartreuse silk grosgrain sash to give it some excitement.

I really didn’t want to have a white dress, but the luminosity and clarity of the colours was important as I still wanted to it be “radiant” and not a block colour. Also the vintage theme picked up all those pale dusky tones so it was appropriate that my dress was  in that range too. My flowers were a really important detail as the full-blown old fashioned varieties were so romantic and the yellow and purple colour scheme really set the dress off and made an impact.”

Ellen accessorised her dress with an Antique Edwardian Chinese gold and jade bracelet she found at Broughton Antiques in Berry. She also wore art deco pearl earrings.

Guests were ferried by private bus provided by Berry Buses from the nearby town of Berry to the wedding.

Ellen says “The guests were asked to dress for an ‘Elegant Country Picnic”. They all did so well and we had wonderful hats, seamed stockings, boaters, suits and many exciting accessories which really made the whole party very beautiful.”

Ellen’s bridesmaids wore beautiful gowns of their choosing- her maid of honour wore a dress from Charlie Brown, her second bridesmaid wore a tailor made gown with fabric from Tessuti Fabrics and Ellen’s third bridesmaid wore a gown borrowed from a friend.

Ellen’s mother walked her down the “aisle” (or through the field!). The aisle was decorated with lanterns and pots of vintage purples, rusty brown and yellow pansies. These also marked the ceremony site.
