Heidi and Jae

A classic Sydney wedding for you today! The wedding of Heidi and Jae! A Japanese inspired, after dark ceremony with a sprinkling of rain for good luck!

Heidi tells the story of how they met “Our story started because of a Japanese t – shirt. I had just returned from a 10 month exchange in Japan and was keen to talk to other people about my experiences. During my first week at uni (and in Sydney!), at an orientation night at our uni, I had spotted Jae at the other end of our uni bar wearing a shirt with a map of Japan on it. I had asked him whether he had been to Japan or just bought the t-shirt, his reply was “Both”!  We soon realized that we both shared a love for Japan and the language, and 5 ½ years together quickly sped by.

I had run off to Japan again for another language exchange program to complete my degree. After 4 months apart Jae came to visit me and had brought with him a ring! He proposed on Christmas Eve, in our beautiful room in the Hilton and I was so completely shocked that he had to ask me several times before I believed him and responded.

Because Japan had played such a special part in bringing us together we wanted to incorporate a Japanese theme into our wedding. So we decided on an elegant chocolate brown and cream based theme with a Japanese twist. Beautiful Japanese paper (chiyogami) featured on our invites, the table place cards, and the easel table seating list. The bridesmaids wore black dresses with a Japanese fabric from Nobue made into sashes. Jae’s dad even read for us a Japanese haiku poem during his speech at the reception.”

Heidi’s gown was from Calabro Bridal. She wore earrings from Rings & Bling and a pearl bracelet from JMG Jewel Design.

Heidi says “One wives tale that I did adhere though was the something old, borrowed, new and blue theory. My ‘new’ was my dress, ‘blue’ was my garter, ‘borrowed’ was heirloom broach that belonged to my great grandmother that was lent to me by my aunty, and ‘old’ was the handkerchief that my mum carried on her wedding day which I carried in my clutch.”

Heidi and Jae created their own invitations with a Japanese flair. Unable to find any other invitations they liked, Heidi and Jae enlisted the bridesmaids and made not only the invitations but also the table place cards, easel list and wedding favors.

The bridesmaids wore different black dresses from Myer with a Japanese fabric from Nobue made into sashes.  Elizabeth Panovski of Sydney Wedding Flowers created the bouquets while The Face Of Hair created the wedding day hair & makeup looks.

Heidi and Jae had their “first look” in the hotel lobby.

Heidi says “We had to make the call as to whether we would use our wet weather option at 10:30am even though our ceremony was not due to start until 3pm. Frantic with the thought of having to make the decision and in desperate need of a hug to cheer me up, Jae and I broke tradition and met up before the wedding to make the decision together!

We also met up before our ceremony to take our location shots before we boarded the boat. I’m certain that it didn’t bring us any bad luck and am happy to report that it is just a silly old wives tale! It actually helped to calm the nerves knowing that we were both together before the ceremony, neither one of us could chicken out!”

Heidi says one of her favourite memories was actually the rain! “Believe it or not the rain! The rain made the day special for us because it is something that we will never forget about the day; we were determined to have an amazing day regardless of the weather. We had so many people come up to us and tell us that rain was good luck than I can count!”. Heidi & Jae and their bridal party were transported on the day in an elegant Rolls Royce from Roll Up In A Rolls.
