One thing couples often lament about is the weather on their wedding day … “will it rain?” and “what do we do if it rains? How will this affect photography?”

It’s essential that you and your photographer have a rain contingency plan set out prior to the big day – this may mean scouting possible undercover locations in the months leading up to the big day or taking your photographers advice on where would be suitable. Somewhere with a bit of shelter but still natural light is ideal.

If you have hired an old car with lovely windows, photos inside the car are especially nice with rain drops on the outside.

Either your reception or ceremony venue often will have a nook and cranny here and there.

Trust the photographer you’ve hired. Their years of experience will mean shooting under any lighting condition will produce great results. One thing you should know is that overcast skies are very kind and produce soft flattering light anyway. Managing your photography expectations in this regard is important so you can remain relaxed all day – if you are hooked on the ‘flare look’ and it’s overcast … you just won’t get that sun flare in your shots.

It’s not a bad idea to organise your own umbrellas although most photographers should have plenty of their own on hand. I would definitely not rely on your driver or the ‘cars’ for umbrellas! In my experience, they usually are mismatched, can be broken and/or colour clashing with a logo or brand on it. We carry a selection of black, white and black & white umbrellas that will go with all bridal parties and couples, however you may want to colour co-ordinate them with wedding colours or buy particularly fancy ones (frills, vintage, etc). If you’re shopping for umbrellas check out Stella Brella.

At the end of the day – as long as you relax, remember to look at your best friend that you just married and have the most blissful time – your photos will reflect all the love and romance that you had – even in the rain!

Ms Gingham says: It’s spring and that means rain so this is a timely post by Nerida. Some great advice regarding the umbrellas too. Any excuse for some online shopping I’m afraid!!

Nerida’s favourite cocktails: Summer time … Lychee Martini, Winter … glass of Kaesler or any red from the Barossa Valley.
