Delwyn and Marcus

When the couple is in Sydney, the photographer in Melbourne and the wedding location in New Zealand, a wedding could become rather stressful. But this retro inspired New Zealand wedding was nothing but beautiful. From the bride’s tea length gown, to the sunshine yellow of the groom’s tie and the intimate celebration they shared with their guests, it was a special day indeed.

Delwyn tells their story. “We met at university, where we did almost all our assignments and study together.  It was all very platonic until a few years later when we went on our first date . . .”

Photographs today are by Erin King. Erin hails from new Zealand but is now based in Melbourne! Erin captures such classic, joyous imagery!

Delwyn chose a gown by Moonlight from Brides of Sydney. She explains ” I wanted a 40’s/50’s look, and a dress that didn’t drag on the ground as we were having an outdoor afternoon ceremony.  I fell in love with the skirt of this dress the first time I tried it on, and added the straps to help balance it out on my frame ” Delwyn’s bridesmaid wore a blue gown from Modcloth.

The flowers were styled by Estelle at Juliette Florists “We didn’t really know what we wanted for the flowers and Estelle was able to take a look at the bride’s dress and from just a quick discussion with us provided us something really beautiful and totally in keeping with our ‘look’.  We gave the bride’s bouquet to the bride’s mother and the bridesmaid’s bouquet to the groom’s mother as thank you gifts during the speeches.”

Delwyn and her bridesmaid’s retro inspire hairstyles were styled by Cathy at Cathy Davys Hair Design & Day Spa. Delwyn recalls “Cathy is like a fairy godmother who, with calm hands and quiet confidence (from years of experience sorting flaky brides out I imagine!), is just the sort of person you want on your team.  Unfortunately the Wellington wind did its best to undo her hard work!”

Delwyn walked down the aisle to “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies. Delwyn says “We chose it as had a familiar 60’s sound, but wasn’t that well known.  The lyrics were perfect as we wanted something happy and hopeful. To be honest, after listening to this a thousand times before the wedding, on the day I didn’t even hear a note of it.  I was too overwhelmed with the joy and happiness from all our guests smiling at me and then seeing my husband waiting for me.”

Delwyn and Marcus chose Boomrock for their wedding venue. Delwyn says,  “Boomrock was perfect for an out of town couple like us trying to organise a wedding event – everything was taken care of, they were totally organised, and had wonderful staff.  The lodge is located in a secluded spot, on a working sheep farm, with amazing views of the ocean and hilly windswept landscapes.  We kept the venue secret and only told guests to meet at a central city hotel to be taken on a bus to the secret location – a few of the local guests had guessed the venue but lovingly played along for those that hadn’t.  Having the wedding on a working farm was special to us as the grooms family are farmers, and then finding out the guests’ bus was stopped by stock trucks and sheep crossing the road on the way there was priceless – we couldn’t have planned that! ”

Delwyn and Marcus put their own personal touch on the day. Delwyn explains “We made all the invites and menus, labels for the photo frames, and the favour bags.  We also wrote our own vows and drafted the ceremony from the information and examples provided to us by our lovely celebrant.”

Delwyn says, “Our wedding was relaxed and happy, joyful, blurry, and we kept it small and meaningful with only our best friends and close family there to celebrate with us.”

Of their photographer, Delwyn says “Erin was so fun and easy going it was like having another of our friends hanging out with us on the day.  She was willing to laugh and let us enjoy our day but still gave us enough direction to have some wonderfully beautiful photos. ”

Delwyn notes “We had our grandparents’ and parents’ wedding photos displayed to show that we were there getting married because of these other people having made the same commitment and promises to each other and creating their families.”

One of Delwyn’s favourite moments was a musical one. ” The groom’s older brother played bagpipes at sunset on a hill above the Lodge and everyone gathered outside to be part of it. ”

Guests were provided with a favour for their bus ride back to the city. Delwyn explains, “We gave brown paper lolly bags stamped with “OM NOM NOM” (the groom’s expression for when something is particularly tasty) given out to guests leaving the venue for the bus-ride home back to the city.”

Congratulations Delwyn and Marcus! Thank you for sharing your wedding say with us! Thank you also to Erin King for sharing today’s photographs with us!

Hi! I was checking information for my future wedding here in New Zealand and I got to this entry. Very beautiful pictures! Btw I am preparing everything and now I decided that I want to give buttons for all my guests (yes, you know something for them to remember). I checked some sites. The nicest is the one in my name but I am still not sure. Do you know of any better site?
