Jacqui & David

Well I’ll be honest, this wedding had me at Jacqui’s polka dot gloves. But then I read that the couple described their wedding as a “British Carnival” and I had to read on. Every little part of the wedding came together to form this incredible, personal day with such a fun, retro, British twist!

Photos today are by Studio Sixty Photography who have a way of capturing whimsical, fun that makes you giggle but still get the story and emotion of the day.

The couple sent invitations on vintage handkerchiefs sourced from eBay.

David wore a bespoke suit from The Cloakroom His groomsmen wore hired suits with vintage 70’s ex-hire ruffled tux shirts from Connecticut USA.

The car? Why it’s David’s second love of course.

Jacqui chose a gown from Karen Willis Holmes and shoes from Vivienne Westwood, Melissa Shoes. She added vintage accessories.

Jacqui’s bridesmaids wore gowns made from a vintage pattern. Vanessa recalls, ” They were made to measure from a 1954 pattern in pastels to make them look like macaroons! An idea inspired by and decided on while in Paris with one of the Bridesmaids.”

Jacqui and David were married at St Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Annerley. Jacqui recalls “The church was connected to where I went to school (as a child I always imagined my wedding there). ” Jacqui walked down the aisle to ‘Ava Maria’.

Jacqui and David even took the party atmosphere on their wedding transport. Jacqui says, “We decided later that the secret to a successful wedding is to be with your soulmate, a red London bus, a mariachi band and victory rolls. I think if we continue this philosophy throughout our married life, we will be just fine.”

Jacqui remembers “A highlight was walking from where the bus had parked at the Story Bridge Hotel to Riverlife. Everyone looked wonderful and the Mariachi’s were playing – we had our own impromptu street parade.”

I adore this moment. Jacqui tells, “David learnt to play ‘We’re going to be friends’ by The White Stripes, as a secret surprise. He played it on the bus and it was the only time I cried all day.”

Jacqui and David held their reception at Riverlife. Jacqui explains “Riverlife, was always going to be our first and only choice for a reception venue. We walked past it all the time on our long walks and love the heritage feel and the way the city lights reflect on the river.”

Amini Concepts not only planned and styled the event they also created the floral arrangements for the reception. As favors, guests received handmade candles. Jacqui recalls “We gave 1930’s – 1970’s tea cups that we filled with wax to make candles with, sourced one by one from flea markets, antique stores and ebay.”

Vintage touches were really important to Jacqui and Andrew, as was DIY! Jacqui explains “We made everything or sourced everything. We made all the bunting, 250 metres of it, which took months. We graphic designed everything ourselves, from the invitations which we printed on old handkerchiefs, to the ‘welcome’ and ‘bathroom’ signs also on handkerchiefs, the table menus, the seating chart which incorporated a London Underground map. David made the light up heart on the dance floor, we filled our teacup candles and made tags, we made our table numbers which were London Underground stations. Most time consuming, but rewarding of all, was sourcing 1930’s – 1940’s coloured glass vases (called depression glass). We went hunting at flea markets, antique stores and ebay for almost a whole year.”

For their first dance, Jacqui says, “We’re losers who can’t dance, despite taking some lessons, we just wanted good music to play! 1940’s Big Band and Italian WW11 Pop Songs, followed by chillout electronic and finishing with favourites. First Dance, we couldn’t choose just one song. Mid way through first song we were joined by everyone: ‘Playground Love by Air’, followed by ‘You’ve got the love’ by Florence and The Machine, followed by ‘Satellite of Love’ by Lou Reed, followed by ‘We used to be friends’ by The Dandy Warhols.
