Ah Kim, your life must really be lacking some spark. A sex tape, TV series, huge range of products and sponsors, spectacularly short marriage, and equally controversial partner just isn’t hitting the mark is it? Just as well you decided to rock up to the impossibly cool Met Gala dressed as Mrs Doubtfire. Whoopsie.

Fortunately there’s slim chance we’ll ever find ourselves tottering precariously in heels anywhere near as high as Kim’s, but there are still four valuable lessons we can take from this PR tragedy.

1: Dress appropriately for the occasion.

When an event is hosted by Vogue you don’t mess about, particularly when you were specifically blacklisted by Anna Wintour the previous year. So turning up looking like your grandmother wrapped you in her curtains – with her eyes closed – is unlikely to ingratiate yourself to your host no matter how punk you think you look. Likewise, a wedding is the most exclusive event you’ll ever attend, and as one of the two red carpet A-listers in attendance you’ll want to be remembered for the right reasons, including how impeccably dapper you looked.

2: There’s floral and floral.

The fact that Kim wore floral is not the only basis of her faux pas; several stars wore floral including Ms Wintour herself. The lesson here is to know how to wear a particular print. Kim’s matching floral gloves and shoes suggest she skipped this class and assumed floral was a pretty version of camo, but you’re in luck. Floral print is very much in as the northern hemisphere heads into summer and our friends at Mr Porter have compiled this collection of items to inspire the botanist in you. This is great news for anyone who isn’t a private investigator named Magnum, and if you’re planning a beach wedding or wish to reflect your keen interest in horticulture be assured that planning floral into your outfit will make it both distinctive and chic. Just exercise discretion, leave the safari suit at home, and in a pinch a printed pocket square is a neat detail.

3: Dress for your body shape.

With Kimye’s celebrity debut expected pretty soon, it’s fair to say that Kim’s substantial baby bump is one of the main reasons why her outfit failed. A repeating print with no tailoring to accent or play down her figure was a recipe for disaster. Or a floral blancmange. Needless to say you should always dress to complement your body shape. The skinny suit and tie that looks super cool on Mr Ryan Gosling is not going to look quite as hot on Arnie.

4: Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

This “news” story reminded me of the classic (and infinitely more valuable) story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Fame must be hard for poor Kim, especially with all those fashion designers courting her to wear their designs. With her brain clearly giddy from visions of red carpets, paparazzi flashes, and front pages, Riccardo Tisci from the esteemed house of Givenchy somehow persuaded Kim into being his guinea pig. Whether Kim truly liked the outfit or just thought it would be a good PR move, it taught Riccardo a valuable lesson in designing maternity gowns and turned Kim into yet another meme.
