Jennifer and Cameron

Jennifer and Cameron (captured by Aldona Kmiec Art Photography) chose Melbourne city for their wedding- making the most of the incredible architecture, historic buildings and graffiti to really make their wedding their own.

Jennifer tells their story. “We call our second date the beginning because that’s when it all began. It was kind of an electric meeting of two people, who seemed like old friends. The connection was instant and it kind of grew from that night.”

Jennifer and Cameron chose The Supper Club  for their wedding ceremony. Jennifer remembering, “The wedding ceremony and lunch was held at the Supper Club which had the most stunning round window with an outlook onto trees and a nearby church steeple. There were empty bottles of wine lining the walls and well worn leather and velvet couches everywhere. It made us both feel right at home, not to mention making superb back drops to our photos.”

For the processional, Jennifer remembers, “We chose ‘Dreams Come True Girl’ by Cass McCombs (we walked down the aisle together, with flower girl – Cam’s youngest daughter Mietta).”

The couple were married by Lise Rodgers. Jennifer recalls, “Fittingly, our celebrant Lise Rodgers, was very particular in getting our story of how we met, across to our guests. She was very professional and honest in her delivery. The moment was captured and nothing felt rehearsed or ordinary, it was a rare window of time..

Our wedding vows were custom made, giving us a chance to use our own language and as neither of us are religious, the traditional formalities were not included. The vows were quite moving to read and hear. When my (Cameron’s) son Finn read the song lyrics by the Flaming Lips ‘Do You Realise’, I must admit, I kind of choked up. I was hard to read my vows after hearing those words. ”

Of their photographer, Jennifer says “Aldona Kmiec is our friend. Aldona had previously taken some great shots during the making of a film clip a couple of years earlier, so there was no doubt whose skills we wanted to utilise at our wedding. Aldona has a way of capturing people in particular moments. Her photography is quite unique and natural and the subjects seem almost unaware that they’re being photographed. ”

Guests celebrated at Bar Lourinha. Jennifer recalling, “Bar Lourinha had amazing Portuguese tapas and delicious selection of wines and it has always been a favourite of ours for dinner. Both venues had perfect service and were very accommodating to us.”

Ben Sanders designed the wedding stationery, Jennifer remarking “We employed the talents of our friend Ben Sanders who is a renowned illustrator and quite recently, a children’s book author. He created these perfect invitations that reflected our trip to New York. The Chrysler Building and its Deco charm was the main motif for our wedding. We made light boxes with his gorgeous, scallop shell pattern. It may also have featured as a trim around our cake but we wouldn’t want to admit to over-using his design!”

Ab Fab Cakes created a three tier art deco styled cake. There was no first dance, Jennifer remarking “We don’t dance (except together in the kitchen). We threw out a lot of the traditional wedding formalities like that! ”

“At the reception, Cam performed three songs (that he wrote). It was a really special moment. Music has always been very important to us and it was great to share these with everyone.”

Just love the Melbourne Wedding, it’s a breath of fresh air! When I look back to the formulaic photography practised when back in the eighties when I was beating the streets with camera in tow I marvel at how far we’ve come, both photographer and client. More power to you Aldona.
