Matt and Lyndsie

Matt and I both wanted to have a low-key wedding in Castlemaine.

We had a pretty tight budget, so we worked with lots of help from family and friends to organise most of the wedding ourselves. It was tough work, but on the day it made everything just that little bit more special.

A close friend who has a graphic design business helloink designed and organised our wedding invitations and thank you cards.

In addition to this, Mum altered my wedding dress and made my headpiece, my Aunty leant me her veil, my Mother-in-Law made our flower girl’s dress, my Maid-of-Honour made the bridesmaids’ jewellery, my bro-maid provided us with the sound equipment for the ceremony and reception, the list goes on!

Another close friend, Jared Marshall, who is a professional photographer and has his own company called Dream on Pictures was our photographer. It was really special to have him do the wedding photos. Jared made us feel really comfortable and took some amazing photographs – all with an injured shoulder from a motorcycle accident a couple of weeks prior! I’d highly recommend Jared to any engaged couple!

My Grandpa who was also a professional photographer took the photos of me getting ready, although I haven’t included those here. And another cousin also agreed to video the ceremony and reception speeches at the last minute.

We held the wedding in Castlemaine, which is where I grew up and where my parents still live. There is a beautiful stretch of land that has large Peppercorn trees and a creek running through it just down from our house, and after much deliberation, Matt and I chose to have the ceremony there.

For our vintage summer wedding, we decorated the area ourselves with bunting strung from the trees, and hired chairs for guests. It was all very easy being close to home.

The day turned out to be around 40 degrees, but by the time the ceremony was held a cool breeze was starting to come through and guests were sheltered by the large Peppercorn trees.

My cousin owns a beautiful vintage Jaguar, which he drove my parents and I in to the ceremony site. He witnessed the last-minute stress experienced when I realised that I couldn’t get my engagement ring off my finger because my hands had swelled so much from the heat!

Matt and I were introduced via a mutual friend a couple of years ago and hit it off from there, so we involved her in the ceremony by asking her to do a ‘reading’ of our story. She cheekily titled it ‘A reading from the book of Matthew…and Lyndsie’.

There are so many pretty spots around Castlemaine, it was hard to choose where to take photos after the ceremony. Jared helped us pick out a few that he knew would look great.

The reception was held at the Mt Alexander Golf Club in Castlemaine. We fell in love with it as soon as we saw the venue – it had so much character. The walls were wood-panelled and covered in golfing memorabilia, faded portraits of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation, and floor-to-ceiling windows looked out onto the golf course.

The golf club was really accommodating. Their volunteers decorated the venue and let us make any further additions that we wanted. We decorated the tables with vases and jugs of flowers from my parents’ garden, draped swathes of material from the ceiling for a more intimate feel, and decorated the outside of the venue with potted plants and succulents.

Mum made the wedding cake which was a combination tower of fruit cake, cheddar, brie and goats cheese topped with figs. It was so tasty!

The reception had a laid back feel in line with the outdoor ceremony. We had lots of dancing, a buffet meal, and great speeches. Jared got some great candid photos.
