Lyn and Matt

When a creative and quirky couple with a love of Lego get married, they celebrate with a Lego building ceremony, colourful Converse sneakers and boots lining the aisle. That’s only a taste of the fun and different ideas Lyn and Matt incorporated into their fun and quirky wedding day (captured by Uber Photography), you’ll just have to read on for the rest!

“We met through mutual friends at a party, over 9 years ago. Matt teased Lyn about the cheap drinks she was drinking. We didn’t see each other for about 7 months, when we met again at another party just after Lyn ended another relationship. The next week we went on our first date and Matt became Lyn’s longest ever one night stand!”

Lyn wore a gown by Jennifer Regan with her bridesmaids in coloured gowns from Dessy Group.

Guests were asked to contribute to the ceremony decor, Lyn explains, “At Christmas last year, we gave our immediate family and friends a small lavender plant, asked them to look after them and give them a characterful new home. As a way of involving our loved ones, we asked them to place their lavender along the aisle before Lyn arrived. We had lavender plants in old boots, an assortment of pots, Lego and teapots, even a kettle! . We want to mention a couple of good friends – Ben and Em – who went on last-minute trips to Bunnings and ensured our venue was set up beautifully before the reception.”

Lyn and Matt were married at  Lawn 29, at the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. Lyn explaining, “As all of our families and many of our friends are either from Newcastle or interstate, we wanted a venue that showcases our city at its finest. The lawn we chose at the Botanic Gardens had views of both the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House and beautiful dappled light. The lawn is also home to Matt’s beloved ‘butt tree’ (bottle tree), and provided a stunning backdrop.”

Lyn walked down the aisle to “All of You” by Aussie band Busby Marou.

Of the ceremony, Lyn tells, “There was lots of original poetry, including our ‘reading’, a love letter to us both written by a friend, and we asked our friends to Instagram our wedding with the hashtag #mattloveslyn.”

In keeping with the colourful Lego touches, the couple had a Lego building ceremony, Lyn explaining, “Matt came up with a Lego building ceremony to symbolise our strong foundation, and the completed Lego fitted into a canvas Matt had made to become a decoration at the reception and a permanent feature in our home.”

Lyn describes the day as “A reflection of us – quirky, handmade and fun!”

“Friends and family were involved as much as possible. Some helped collect jars, some went on late night lavender raids or rigged up their spare room to dry said lavender, and other guests doubled as our wonderful suppliers – such as our videographer and hair stylist. One bridesmaid, Steph, acted as a stand-in seamstress, fixing Lyn’s broken dress.”

The Choo Choo Express provided transport for the day! Lyn telling, “We included a ticket in each invitation, but didn’t tell guests what it was for. To transport guests from the lawn to the reception (and the bridal party to photo locations), we hired the tour train, Choo Choo Express. We loved hearing how much our guests enjoyed being big kids again on the train, and the bridal party had a great time riding around the gardens.”

Of their photographer, Lyn remarks, “Chris’ unbuttoned shirt, disheveled tie, black jeans and Converse were the perfect accompaniment to our day. He was willing to have fun, beared with us while we pretended to be Lego people, was able to laugh with our larger than life Best Man and encouraged us to do running zombie shots. Despite this, he blended in to the crowd and several guests commented that they didn’t even know a photographer was there. Our photos were spontaneous and show how much fun we were having. In a word, he was fab! ”

Celebrations continued at the Botanic Gardens Restaurant . “The restaurant had a lovely feel, open space and tasty food, plus they allowed us to decorate the space ourselves in the way we wanted.”

A colourful wedding cake was made by Faye Cahill Cake Design. Lyn telling, “We designed our cake, and the ladies at Faye Cahill did an amazing job of bringing Matt’s sketch and paper model to life. It was beautifully detailed and tasted amazing. We wanted something different, so we had carrot and walnut cake with white chocolate ganache.”

The couple used a Juke Case at both the ceremony and reception along with their ipod for the music.

“To keep our reception as casual and free-flowing as our ceremony, we had a cocktail wedding. This meant we didn’t have to do seating plans and any awkwardness from forced seating arrangements were limited.”

The speeches were particularly memorable, says Lyn. “Matt’s Best Man, LJ, made a very memorable speech. He wrote a song to the tune of ‘The Brady Bunch’ (‘The Colzey Bunch’), and ‘played’ his guitar by randomly strumming and hitting it with minimal musical talent. Matt, Lyn and half the guests were in tears of laughter.”

For their first dance, Lyn remembers, “Many years ago we took Modern Jive classes, so our first dance included assorted un-choreographed moves and dips and lots of giggles. We danced to “Everything” by Michael Buble.”
