Katie & Corey

Katie and Corey wanted a minimalist luxe wedding – Katie wanted the emphasis placed on beautiful flowers with a feeling of warmth, and their decision let the venue and their own story take centre stage as captured so beautifully by photographer Whitewall Photography.

Katie tells the story of how she met Corey. “Corey and I met through his sister Hayley. Hayley and I had one of those instant friendships where we knew we would be friends from the minute we met. It was after finishing a shift together at Peter Alexander, where we both worked at the time, that I first met Corey when he came to pick Hayley up. It was an instant attraction and only a few weeks later after our work Christmas party, Hayley played Cupid and set us up.”

Katie chose a gown from designer Johanna Johnson , noting, “Deciding on my dress was the first big decision I made – and the easiest one. I had loved Johanna Johnson’s dresses for years and knew that I wanted a less traditional slim line silk wedding dress. Three days after Corey proposed before we left Sydney to return home, I ended up in Paddington and managed to find a moment to sneakily try on a few of her gorgeous gowns. The Hendricks dress was the third dress I tried on and I thought I was onto a winner. Four months later, I made the trip back to Sydney with my mum and bridesmaids and made it official.” Katie’s bridesmaids wore midnight blue gowns from J’adore.

Katie and Corey chose Kingsford Homestead for their wedding, remarking, “Our wedding was held on the most beautiful property, forty five minutes outside of Adelaide. It is a gorgeous homestead circa 1856 that has been recently renovated. The homestead is surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful gardens – we knew it was the perfect spot from the moment we arrived. But what most attracted us to the venue was the fact that it came with accommodation onsite for our bridal party. For us that allowed us to turn our wedding into a true event and the weekend we spent with our best friends is something we will cherish forever. It was also magical having the entire homestead to ourselves the day after our wedding, including a degustation dinner in the original homestead cellars.”

Katie chose “How Long Will I Love You” by Ellie Goulding for her walk down the aisle.

“The sun came out just as we said our vows – it felt like the universe was giving us its blessing.”

Paul Rouse officiated the ceremony, the bride remembering, “For us the ceremony needed to embody us as a couple and what marriage meant to us. For us the day was to cement something that had existed between us for a very long time – this innate knowledge that we would spend the rest of our days together, having a lot of fun as we went. It was this concept of fun that shone through the readings – Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss and I Like You by Sandol Stoddard Warburg. Corey and I wrote our own vows and these were woven in with the more traditional wedding affirmations.”

“Scout from Whitewall Photography was our go to photographer from the moment we started planning the wedding. My husband, a photographer himself, loved the candid nature of Scout’s work and the way he captures his subjects. What was fabulous was that Scout captured moments that we had completely forgot existed as he seamlessly blended into the fabric of our day. He was so easy and familiar with the entire bridal party and it felt like having a friend behind the lens.”

Katie notes, “I’ve always thought it was a bit of a cliche when you hear people say that their wedding day was the best day of their life but I didn’t realise the truth in the statement until I had slipped on my wedding dress and was about to walk down the aisle towards Corey. Our wedding day was filled with so much fun, laughter and genuine love, not only for each other but the people around us. Corey and I had decided that the most important thing for us was that our wedding was a party and it will be a party we will remember forever.”

Events and Co  styled the floral arrangements for the day, the guests dining at long tables under a clear marquee. Katie remarks, “I love flowers and foliage and I knew that this was what I wanted as the primary styling for the event. I wanted a clean, modern feel with a variety of white flowers and big green foliage. Large arrangements were evident either side of the aisle, on the lounge bars and a long floral installation was a feature piece above the long tables and dancefloor.

Glossy magnolia leaves were offset by white orchids, hydrangeas, lisianthus, tulips, snap dragons and hyacinths. This neutral palate was then complemented by copper vessels to add a feeling of luxe and warmth to the event. To make the most of the view and star filled sky we had a clear marquee and this was filled with fairy lights to create atmosphere.”

The modern feel of the styling was topped off with stationery designed by Jasmine Dowling.

“Inside the venue I wanted it to be very unfussy and for the minimalist design features to speak for themselves – this is why I choose uncovered wooden tables offset with white bentwoods. Outside of the marquee I created a lounge area, where guests could access a separate bar and sit around small tables and couches. This allowed people to make the most of the space and to easily move between the dancefloor and chill out space.”

Of their first dance, Katie remembers, “We chose Fever by Peggy Lee. Not only was it a song about a love that burns bright but it had a great tempo and allowed us to have a lot of fun for our first dance as a married couple.”

“For us music was so important to creating the right atmosphere and this started from the minute I walked down the aisle. Delia Obst provided the most fabulous acoustic accompaniment during and after the ceremony and our DJ, Nick Marwe, had our guests on the dancefloor with just the right mix of old favourites and new hits.”
