Amy & Sam

The gorgeous romance of Amy & Sam’s Spring Ewingsdale Hall wedding is palpable. From the groom’s face as he sees his bride walk towards him, the gorgeous sunset portraits to the beautifully decorated reception. Amy and Sam chose Camilla Kirk Photography to capture their wedding day.

On how they met, Amy tells, “Despite both growing up in a small country town, Sam and I did not meet until we were both living in Brisbane for work and university! We met through mutual friends.”

Amy chose a Demetrios gown from Rosa + Mary’s Bridal Shop, noting, “It took me a long time to find my wedding dress – I knew I wanted a dress with some sort of a sleeve and back detail. I tried on lots and LOTS of dresses to no avail. I kept reading in bridal magazines that a lot of bride’s perfect dress was the first one they tried on!

I tried on my Demetrios gown from Rosa and Mary’s bridal shop in Varsity Lakes and knew it was the one. It is form fitting and entirely embellished with Venice lace. I loved the flattering V-neckline and the sheer lace back with the row of buttons. It has a nude underlay with an ivory overlay which means that the intricate embellishments stand out just perfectly – it wouldn’t be the same without the nude underneath! It has a classic, yet slightly vintage feel and I felt so comfortable in it all day.”

The couple kicked off their day with The Magic Bus, noting, “The party vibe was definitely established early with our guests being picked up in a double decker Red Love Bus, which would take them to the wedding and back into Byron once the night was over. The bus driver was even a highlight in his 70’s style suit and long hair, not to mention the funky music playing – very Byron Bay!”

Of her walk down the aisle, Amy remembers ,”Our good friend Ryan Martin was our musician on the day and he did a cover of James Bay’s ‘Hold Back The River’.”

Amy and Sam chose Byron Bay venue Ewingsdale Hall for their wedding, thanks to their wedding planner The Events Lounge noting, “I had an initial meeting with The Events Lounge to see how their on the day co-ordination service would tie in with our wedding plans. Rachel listened to my criteria for our ideal venue and suggested the Ewingsdale Hall just outside of Byron Bay. Sam and I went down for a look and instantly fell in love. We adored the huge fig trees that line the road, the light, blank canvas of the hall inside and the ample grass areas with beautiful green surrounds. Being able to hold both the ceremony and reception in the one place was also a big plus for us. We decided straight away that it was perfect and made a booking.”

Randa Karzon officiated the ceremony, Amy noting, “Both Sam and I are Catholic, so despite us choosing to have our ceremony outside, we still wanted it to feel fairly traditional. My cousin Sophie performed a reading from the Bible during our ceremony. We both wrote our own vows and read them out to each other for the first time on the actual day.

My aunty and uncle were married on the same day as us 27 years ago, the same cross that she had tied around her bouquet on her wedding day, was used as my ‘something borrowed’ to tie around my bouquet on the day. Our celebrant Randa was also one of my lecturers from college.”

Of their photographer, Amy remembers, “Camilla our photographer was an absolute star! From traveling to the venue the week before and traipsing through paddocks to find the best location for us, to always being more than happy to help with any queries we had. She was extremely easy to work with, very organised and both Sam and I felt so comfortable in her presence. Our second shooter Chris was also terrific! We couldn’t have been happier!”

“Our entire wedding was very family orientated, and to me they were the most special details of the day . My aunty making the wedding cake to a traditional family recipe, great aunts arranging all the table flowers, my cousin the MC, family members making finger food for guests to enjoy while we were off having photos taken, family members helping to set up and pack down the venue, my uncle who works for an alcohol company organising the alcohol and bar set up, family members helping with DIY elements (e.g. stepdad making our wedding arch), my dad’s cherished Holden Monaro as the bridal car, we also had all of our siblings in our bridal party (my sister as maid of honour, Sam’s sister as one of my bridesmaids and Sam’s brother as his best man).”

Guests each received a jar of honey, the bride remembering, “The week before we poured honey into 103 little glass jars for our favours – a messy job to say the least but they looked fantastic on the tables with their golden glow.”

Sam (groom) made a gorgeous wooden box with lid and lock for guest cards to go into at reception. He also carved out our initials for the front. We now keep all our wedding keepsakes in it.”

Of their first dance, Amy remembers, “We chose a cover – Coldplay’s ‘Magic’. Sam and I didn’t give the first dance much thought as we both consider ourselves fairly good dancers on a dancefloor, however formal dancing is a whole other thing! We just held each other and rocked back and forth really! There was lots of laughing!

When it was time for the bridal party to join us we were missing two groomsmen (they were apparently in the bathroom) so the other two groomsmen had to dance with 2 bridesmaids each. Later my mum said to me that my 82 year old Grandpa leaned across to her during our first dance and whispered ‘they have no idea how to dance do they?’ ”
