Alice & Michael
I am so head over heels for a floral print wedidng gown and when you pair it with a matching hairpiece well you can imagine how smitten I am with this fun High Church Brisbane wedding. But while the pretty is there, it is the stories – including the bride’s broken ankle that make this wedding so very special. Alice and Michael chose photographer The Left Lane Photographs to capture their day.
The day started off with a bang, literally, Alice explains, “The most dramatic incident happened before the wedding had begun, I (being a complete klutz) fell down precisely one step (yes – exactly one step) and managed to break a bone in my foot. My trusty bridesmaids leapt into action and promptly ran to the nearest chemist to buy all manner of pain and swelling reducing things. They even managed to locate a walking stick and covered in ribbon so it matched my dress. Whilst it may have been better for my foot to keep it iced and elevated, I wasn’t letting it ruin my enjoyment of my wedding day. With the help of my trusty stick and husband I managed to walk down the aisle and dance the night away.”
Jennifer Gifford Designs created Alice’s wedding gown, the bride remarking, “I wore a tea-length Alea gown from Jennifer Gifford Designs. I knew that I didn’t want a traditional or long wedding gown and so when I saw the Alea gown I knew it was the dress I was going to wear! Getting it made was so fun, and Jennifer is so lovely and accommodating which was so wonderful, particularly as I was living interstate whilst I was planning the wedding. As an added benefit – I can wear it again!”
“Heath from The Left Lane Photographs was fantastic, so lovely and we absolutely loved the way the photographs turned out. He really understood what we wanted from the photography and got so many fantastic shots. He was also very flexible and managed to come up with some interesting and fun shot ideas despite the fact that Alice couldn’t move around particularly easily. We had so many comments from our guests about how lovely he was and what great pictures he took.”
“I loved having a first look and coming into the wedding together, I am not particularly keen on being the centre of attention so having Michael’s support was really fantastic and calmed me down about the whole thing.”
The bride and groom walked down the aisle together to Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,
High Church was chosen as the wedding venue. Alice remarking, “Our wedding was held at High Church in Fortitude Valley. High Church really suited our needs because it is centrally located and allowed us to have the ceremony and the reception in the same place, without a long break between the two. It is such a gorgeous space and really acts as a blank canvas.”
No Fuss Marriages officiated Alice and Michael’s wedding ceremony, Alice remembering, “We wanted our ceremony to be short and sweet! Our celebrant Ange from No Fuss Marriages really understood what we wanted from the ceremony. We decided to walk in to the ceremony together because we wanted to come to marriage together, being a joint decision made by equals. As Michael is a triplet, he wanted to include his sisters in the ceremony and they both did readings.
We also had a friend read the final paragraphs from Justice Kennedy’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (the United States Supreme Court’s decision which legalised gay marriage) as we thought it best encapsulated the meaning of marriage as an institution to us.”
Alice and Michael worked with wedding coordinator The Other Bridesmaid to ensure the day ran smoothly. Alice remarks, “On-the-day co-ordination is such a good idea, particularly if you are planning from afar. Alexia from The Other Bridesmaid was absolutely amazing, she made sure the day ran smoothly so that we could relax and enjoy it and she thought of so many things that we would have completely missed or forgotten about.”
“We made a number of things for the day – we put together all of the stationery items, bar the invitations (save the dates, place cards, menus, programs, seating chart and table numbers). We also dyed all of the napkins bright pink to give the room a bit of colour and spray painted some small plastic animals to act as a very small favour (in lieu of favours we gave a donation to the Fred Hollows Foundation and Oxfam). The biggest DIY project was the cake table. All of the cakes were made by Alice, her bridesmaid and our families.”
Guests enjoyed a feast created by Zen Catering, Alice telling, “We loved Zen Catering for serving delicious food and having the most lovely waitstaff. We have had so many comments on both the deliciousness of the food and on how accommodating the staff were. Dietary requirements were absolutely no issue.”
“Our key concern was to keep the day as light and relaxed as possible, we just wanted to have a really fun party with good food and drink, fun music and great people. And that is exactly what we had.”
Radio Club Band kicked off the dance floor, Alice noting, “The Radio Club Band gave the night such fantastic energy and had people dancing very exuberantly all night.”
