FLOWERS! You’ve been pinning for months, eyeing availability charts, scrolling through your favourite insta-feeds hunting for the best floral combinations like an addict. If you’re particularly flower mad, you’re probably getting married in that tiny window of the year that is peony season in Australia (November, if you’re wondering).
And, they’re the photos everyone drools over, long after your big, glorious day is well behind you. Trailing wild bouquets, hanging florals, gorgeous table garlands and dessert table florals. And to boot, the flowers you choose for your wedding are likely to be in season on your anniversary every year – nature’s convenient reminder of your special day – so thoughtful!
Now, while you may want to leave the bouquets to the professionals, there are lots of easy and budget friendly floral projects that you can weave into your wedding day for those totally epic touches you’ll be reminiscing about for years to come.
Over the next couple of months I’ll be sharing gorgeous DIY floral projects, perfect for taking your wedding to the next level, starting with one of our favourites – beautiful wild floral garlands for the bride and groom’s chairs. So romantic!
Indulge your wild bohemian heart with these romantic trailing botanicals! We love the way the two chairs are brought together by sprays of botanicals that look like they’ve just grown between the two chairs.
It’s a project that, with a little planning, takes all of 10 to 15 minutes to do.
Just a few things to keep in mind, if you’ll be having an outdoor or warm summer wedding, choose seasonal botanicals that will hold up well to being out of water for hours on end – think woody foliages like eucalyptus, magnolia or leather fern, and hardy blossoms like giant sim carnations, orchids or proteas.
This easy (and totally satisfying) project can be prepared the day before your wedding, and tied to your chairs on the day by a trusted friend – or even yourself if you’re feeling hands-on.
What you’ll need:
- Foliage – we love twisty natural wattle, fine eucalyptus, as well as romantic jasmine, pepper or ivy berry, depending on what’s in season
- Flowers – we used trailing hellebores and a couple of ranunculus
- Flower shears or sharp scissors
- Craft wire
- Twine
- Two chairs
What to do:
Step 1. Prepare your botanicals. If using branchy foliage, trim into about 10 to 12 smaller sections or “branchettes”. Save any small sprigs or offcuts as they’re great for covering up wiring or filling in the gaps.
Step 2. Create foliage sprays. Using two of your foliage stems, create a spray by wiring them end-to-end. If you have any unattractive wiring, add an offcut to cover it up! Repeat until you have around five or six sprays.
Step 3. Create flower sprays. Layer a couple of short flower stems together and simply wrap with wire. We love the loose, flowing bohemian look, and this can be achieved by layering a few beautiful blooms at different heights and keeping it sparse and layered rather than close and tight. Create two or three flower sprays and pop into a jar of fresh water until you are ready to add them to your chair.
Step 4. Start with a foliage foundation. Tie your foliage sprays directly onto your chairs using twine or wire, focusing on the inner edges of the chairs that are facing each other for a romantic touch!
Step 5. Finish with florals. Add a pretty focal point to each chair by tying on your floral sprays. You may need to tie these down in more than one spot (top and bottom) to ensure your blooms have some support to hold them up as the stems will wilt a little once they’re out of water.
Voila! So romantic. The perfect way to end your perfect day, your gown gathered up, cuddling up with your new hubby, on beautiful bloom decked chairs as the celebration unfolds.
