Jocelyn and David

There are beautiful romantic facets to a vintage style engagement shoot. But there is something really fun and happy about gorgeous, modern styled outfits and the fun of bright bold colours. Especially if your personality is anything but “vintage picnic”. Today’s shoot comes to us from Denise Birdsong and take us to the bay city of San Francisco.

Jocelyn tells their story. ” April 8th 2009 through Match.com (hopefully someone from Match reads this and puts us in a commercial someday) and shortly after, realized that we were a match made in the streets of SF.  Last November, Davy took me on an impromptu walk and proposed in front of the Chinatown Public Library, a place we had gone by on their first date. We’ll be getting married on April 8th 2012, 3 years after we first met. ”

Ania and Russ

Art galleries are such wonderful places don’t you think? So many stories to be told and so much beauty on the walls. Today’s couple Ania and Russ celebrated their engagement with a set of photographs together at Carriageworks and the photos  are a mix of the beautiful raw, distressed walls and stunning art (and of course, plenty of Ania and Russ’ love). They come to us today from photographer Marzena Wasilewska.

Ania notes “We had our engagement session about 6 months before the wedding, we thought we would be a great memento from our engagement period, it was important for us do to have it done it the place which we spent lots of time in and was special for us. The session took place in Newtown, Sydney where we lived most of the time, it?s a very creative and inspiring suburb with lots of street art, beautiful terraced houses, second hand bookshops and cosy cafes. The first set of the photos was taken in a modern art space called Carriageworks where Russell and I like to visit every Saturday. It was a beautiful afternoon in August, quite blistery, which we didn’t mind at all! Together with our photographer, Marzena we walked down the streets of Newtown and had lots of fun wandering to all of our favourite spots in the suburb.”

“Russell and I met 6 years ago in London. I was doing a job internship and Russ was getting some international experience as a graphic designer and saving up for his travels. We both ended up in North London in a short-term backpackers accommodation where we would be having breakfast on the stairs in morning or share a glass of Baileys in the evening. Russ is originally from Australia, I am Polish. After my internship had finished and I left London, Russ decided to visit me in Poland where we spent 3 great days together before he got on a plane and flew away to live in New Zealand. We didn’t see each other for 1.5 years during which time we kept in touch by email, phone, sending each other little presents. In 2007 I decided to come to Sydney, so did Russ and we met up at the airport on the same day. A few weeks later we decided to move in together for the time of my stay in Sydney. ”

“The holiday finished eventually and sadly it was time for me to go back to university in Poland. Not wanting to get separated Russ decided to take up the challenge and come to live there with me in Poland! It was a great experience for both of us and also a chance for Russ to get to know my family, culture and the language. After finishing my degree we went on a few weeks holiday in Eastern Europe. One day we went of a bike tour in Slovenia, it was a lovely autumn afternoon. We were cycling through wineries and eventually decided to stop on top of a hill for a picnic. In one moment Russ asked completely unexpectedly? How would you say in Polish: ?will you marry me?? A couple of months later we moved to Australia as an engaged couple. This is where we had our wedding 1.5 years later.”

Felicia and Derek

Late last year I was dusting off my archives and stumbled across this beautiful shoot Nattnee Photography had sent me. I think it’s time to let it see the light with it’s fantastic concept, inspired by a movie!

Nattnee explains, “For our shoot, inspiration came from the movie In the Mood for Love. Set in 1960s Hong Kong, it tells a tale of nobly unrequited love. In it the female lead, Maggie Cheung, wears upwards of 20 different qipaos, or traditional Chinese dresses. ”

“Armed with a retro inspired black dress, a couple of qipaos (traditional Chinese dresses) and a conveniently borrowed Jaguar, we set about recreating the feel of the movie. The final series of shots was taken inside the Vietnamese restaurant SaigonSaigon, who were kind enough to let us utilise their facilities prior to dinner service.””

Janet and Darrell

With such a festive feel in the air, I couldn’t resist sharing this absolute beauty of an engagement shoot which is nothing but fun! Bear heads? Inflatable letters? Oh let’s go have some fun!

This shoot comes today by Hailey of You Can’t Be Serious Photography. Hailey has a vivid imagination (remember Julie and Pedzi’s engagement shoot?) and she says “The shoot was an idea I had brewing for ages and was just waiting for a cool couple to come along and snap it up! I sent them three different concepts and then they chose their favourite one. I even had in mind what they should wear!! hahah! Red dress blue suit! Janet and Darrell  had so much faith in me as the heads and outfits would have cost quite a bit of MONEY!!  I would love to do more of these creative concept type shoots… not sure if you can mention that but just putting it out there all the same! ”

“Some people say that “love is always found in the most unlikely of places” or “you don’t find love but love finds you”.  For us, our first chance acquaintance was in the year 1999 at a combined year 10 high school maths camp.  Through sharing simultaneous solutions and comparing parabolic functions, our  sine and cos waves aligned and the rest is history!”

“I’m an Art Director and Darrell  is a Lawyer based in Brisbane and we both wanted their engagement photos to be something different.  We wanted their photos to be fun and creative and to capture the love and joy that we  both share in each other’s company.  We also wanted their engagement photos to show our personalities, be whimsical and also nothing too serious.”

“We came across Hailey Bartholomew from You Can’t Be Serious and instantly fell in love with her beautiful images.  Her artistic talent, sense of humour and her ability to really capture the warmth in people’s emotions made choosing Hailey virtually a non-decision!”.”

“Hailey and the Darrell and I-to-be threw around some crazy ideas for their engagement shoot but ultimately, the idea of having a Bear and Panda costume dressed in a twirly red dress and a sharp blue suit was way too cute to refuse.  The Bear and Panda suits also featured at our  recent engagement party with guests also having the chance to pose with them on for photos!”

“We couldn’t be more happy with their engagement shoot. It was such a fun day and the photos really showed that!.  These photos truly captured our imagination and who we are as a couple and have created some wonderful memories that we will share with friends and family forever.”

Lindsey and Greg

Andy Collins sent over this simply sweet engagement shoot to share with you today! I love the sweetness of today’s shoot, it’s just lovely, beautiful love. Andy tells “Greg and Lindsey are Brisbane born and bred, and they both loved the idea of having an engagement shoot in the famous Brisbane park – the Sherwood Arboretum – as they both played in the park as children.

Greg and Lindsey are a bit shy when it comes to getting photos taken, so I thought I would help them to relax by using a few props such as balloons and question and answer flip cards.

They are a fantastic, in-love couple and I can’t wait to photograph them again on their wedding day…”

Lindsey recalls “Greg and I met through a mutual friend on a random Wednesday night in March 2007 at a Brisbane bar called Ric’s.”

“While nothing happened that night between us – I definitely was attracted to Greg’s cheeky nature and his charming smile, and I like to think I made a good impression on Greg that night too.”

“It actually took a look while for the first date to happen – Greg’s brother was about to get married so Greg was busy with groomsmen duties. I actually ended up seeing Greg out the night of his brother’s wedding – and we ended up having our first kiss that night – woops! He looked so handsome in his tux so I couldn’t resist – ha!”

“We finally had our first date on ANZAC Day in 2007, and we went back to the bar where we first met to have a few drinks and watch a band. After the date finished and we said our goodbyes, I remember thinking I had met the man of my dreams and I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face.”

“And as corny as it sounds, I haven’t looked back since. 4.5 years later and I’m about to marry Greg – the absolute best guy I could have ever wished for and the love of my life.”
