Whitney and Ryan

Although I wear my love of Australian weddings on my sleeve, every now and then an international beauty drops onto my radar and I have to share. Not only because we have such a large percentage of international readers, but because confining inspiration to our own country is a little bit limited! I love seeing what brides and grooms around the world do to celebrate their wedding days. So as we head into Winter, this Summery Californian Winery celebration is just the thing to warm the cockles of your heart.

Here’s Whitney and Ryan’s story as told on their wedding website. “We met at none other than Mary’s Pizza Shack, in Novato, California.  Whitney was desperate for an easy job so she could pay for all of those dreamy clothes at Abercrombie and Fitch, and Ryan had been promoted to manager after dedication and hard work as a busser and server.  Of course, we had been attending the same high school for 3 years, but let’s face it – when you’re not running in the same circle of friends in high school, you may as well live on different planets.  Whitney began as a hostess, but quickly learned that the job entailed working early morning shifts making salads on Saturdays.  She was most definitely interested in one thing, and one thing only on the weekends: sleeping in.  Little did she know, Ryan was creating the schedules during those days, so the early morning shifts were the perfect opportunity for him to get to know the new hostess on the block.  We immediately hit it off, and in the words of some of our closest friends, “it was meant to be”.

Throughout the next 4 years we grew as individuals, yet consistently communicated with one another and continued a friendship.  As Whitney’s education in Chico came to an end, and Ryan was ready to embark on his journey into law enforcement in the Bay Area, we reconnected again.  Whitney was feverishly dedicated to her student teaching and studies in her last year at Chico State, which left little time for travel to visit Ryan.  He, however, reinstated the concept of chivalry and did everything in his power to court Whitney as often as possible. When Ryan was in town, we frequented a steakhouse in Chico called 5th Street.  Our favorite meal there is called “Nick’s Grill”, so when Ryan began planning and plotting the perfect proposal a year or so later, he had to include Whitney’s ideal steak dinner.

Ryan began gathering ideas and designs for an engagement ring over the next couple of years, which he made a reality by working with the same jeweler in San Francisco who created his mother’s engagement ring 20 years prior.  With all of the details in place and ready to execute, not to mention an entirely oblivious Whitney, we drove up to Truckee, Tahoe for a relaxing holiday trip before Christmas.  Our first night there was just lovely, with beautiful snow falling all around the cabin.  The following day, Ryan and Whitney ventured up to Squaw Valley to ice skate on the Olympic rink.  With Ryan channeling his inner Scott Hamilton, and Whitney gracefully falling on her rear countless times, we retired to some drinks by the fire in the lodge.  Back at the cabin in Truckee, and after a long day on top of the mountain, Ryan sent Whitney into the other room to rest while he recreated the steak dinner from Chico.  When Whitney came out from their room, the entire cabin was adorned with candles, and smelled like filet mignon and baked potatoes.  After a delicious meal, Ryan gave Whitney her “silly little present” he had brought up as an early Christmas gift.  While she opened the beautiful card he had written to her, Ryan got down on his knee, opened up a little black box, and proposed to Whitney.  And the rest, dear family and friends, is history.  She said yes, of course.”

Grant Avenue Florist created luscious green and white floral arrangements.

Whitney chose a lace gown from Lazaro for her wedding gown. She remarks “His designs are absolutely fabulous.  When I saw the dress at The Bridal Galleria in San Francisco, I knew I had to have it.  Originally I didn’t choose this dress to try on, but when my wedding dress consultant held it out for me to slide into, it was so apparent this dress would be perfect.  The lace is to die for, and I danced literally all night long in it! I wore pearl and diamond earrings that belong to my mother, and they complimented the lacy gown just beautifully.  They were subtle, which is all I desired in comparison to the detailed dress.  My mother’s best friend loaned her pearl and diamond three-strand bracelet to me, which was the finishing touch!  It belonged to her mother, so I had my something borrowed covered.”

Whitney’s bridesmaids wore dark blue gowns from J.Crew and jewels by Emily Warner Designs. Whitney explains “Emily’s work can be found on Etsy.  She is such a doll, and wonderful to work with on designing jewellery.  Emily made several prototypes until I was thrilled with the design.  My bridesmaids LOVED the earrings!”

Whitney and Ryan chose B.R Cohn in Sonoma Valley for their wedding. Whitney remarks “B.R. Cohn was a dream come true venue.  It had every last detail we wanted – natural grace and elegance, with an at-home comfortable feel to it.  The venue has so many ceremony and reception locations to choose from, which provided a nice, spread out feel to it.  The staff is incredible, and the rolling vineyard views are absolutely to die for!  I couldn’t have asked for a better bridal suite in which to get ready, a stunning deck overlooking the vineyards on which to say my vows, and an enchanting olive grove where our guests were wined and dined all evening long.  We love B.R. Cohn!”

Of their photographer, Whitney says “Gerald is positively amazing. After working with him, he feels like a part of our family. He is extremely thoughtful, and wants nothing more than to make your day exactly what you envision.  What I loved most about Gerald was the fact that he puts his opinion aside and focuses solely on his clients’ desires and dreams. Gerald guided us through our wedding day beautifully, capturing every last special moment, and with such incredible ease!  I can’t imagine our photos being taken by any other photographer.”

Whitney describes the wedding as “Elegant, wine-country wedding with unique, rustic details, highlighted by whites, greens, and ivory hues, delicious food, fantastic guests, amazing music, and best of all, unconditional love.”

Whitney walked down the aisle to a sentimental family song, flanked by her parents. Whitney recalls “I chose “For the Beauty of the Earth”.  It’s a hymn that my family has sung for years.  It was featured at my grandmother’s service when she passed away, and since she couldn’t be at the wedding, this hymn represented her in spirit.  I found a lovely acoustic guitar version, which was exactly what my husband and I wanted to have playing as I walked toward him as his future wife.”

Glass jars of coloured cookies were given as favors. Whitney says “We had cookies as our favors, and they were an absolute hit.  My darling mother-in-law spent the days leading into the wedding baking chocolate chip, ginger-molasses, oatmeal raisin, and sugar cookies.  They were fantastically delicious, and the cookie table itself looked so wonderful!  No detail was left undone.  My aunt does printing for Francis Ford Coppola, so she helped design the “cookie recipe books” that guests could take home along with their bags of cookies.”

Whitney loved “Marrying the man of my dreams, being surrounded by incredibly supportive family and friends, each little detail that represented our personalities and love for one another, yummy food and wine, and a lifetime of memories!”

Whitney’s sisters has a huge impact on the day. Whitney says “Our favors were definitely DIY, along with all of the chalkboard details.  One of my sisters is incredibly artistic, so she covered all of the chalkboard phrases and writing, while the other sister planned my entire wedding!  I am forever indebted to them.”

A three tier wedding cake was created by Flour Chyld Bakery.

The first dance was utterly romantic. Whitney recalls “Our first dance was like dancing on a cloud.  We were surrounded by the most important family and friends in our lives, yet we felt all alone and so in love on the dance floor.  We danced to Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” and every time I hear it now I can’t help but cry!”

The couple hired Quantum Music Event Planners for the wedding music. Whitney says “Our DJ was amazing.  He met with us once to go over our music taste and style, and absolutely nailed both the post-ceremony/cocktail hour music and the reception playlist.  That dance floor was jam-packed all night long!”

Nicola and Dave

This sweet New Zealand wedding held at Napier is such a delight- from the brides ea length ruffly dress to the fresh punches of yellow and beautiful bouquet. It’s laid back new Zealand at it’s finest!

Of how they met, Nicola says “Dave and I met online when I first moved to London.  I was staying with my uncle and was finding it difficult to meet people my own age. Dave offered to show me around central London (even though he knew very little about the area). It was the first time either of us had ever met someone online (and the last!)”.

Photographs today are by Meredith Lord Photography. Meredith’s clean and elegant style was so complimentary to the nature of Nicola and David’s wedding.

Nicola has her tea length ruffly dress made by a local dressmaker. She recalls “I took a gamble having it made and choosing not to go for a full length dress, but I was so happy I did.” Nicole paired it with shoes from Mischief Shoes, Wellington and a beautiful green, yellow and white bouquet styled by Madisons, Napier.

Nicola’s bridesmaids wore gowns from Portmans. Nicola walked down the aisle to ‘Heartbeats’ by Jose Gonzalez.

Nicola and David held their wedding ceremony at Centennial Gardens, Napier .

Nicola and David were married by Amy Edwards. Nicola remarks ” I loved the amazing women we chose to help us with our day. Our celebrant was bubbly and fun and was so easy to be around, she made everyone so comfortable; our florist knew exactly what I meant when I said I wanted rustic, but not too rustic; our photographer who understood straight away that we wanted whimsical and different; and our musician who played the most beautiful jazz songs all night!”

David wore a grey suit from Rosevear Brothers.

Of their photographer, Nicola says “I came across Meredith by chance when I was admiring pictures of Napier online. I then looked her up and realised she was a wedding photographer, and I was lucky enough that she was still free on our wedding date. Meredith was so helpful when I was trying to find a wedding venue and was so flexible about what we wanted.  We were adamant that we didn’t want a photo shoot that took a couple of hours and instead wanted her to capture us enjoying our wedding.  She worked so quickly so we didn’t spend too long away from our guests and still produced amazing photos!”

Nicola and David held their reception at the Hawkes Bay Club as a last minute choice. Nicola explains “My original venue fell through three months before the wedding and we were frantically searching for an alternative, when our caterer called to say the Hawkes Bay Club was free. We were so desperate to get a venue sorted we booked it without even seeing inside.  When we finally saw it (six weeks before the wedding) we were so relieved that it was a lovely old house with lots of character. We had our heart set on having dinner in the front garden, but the weather meant we had to have it inside.”

The wedding was catered by Design Cuisine. Nicola recalls “I loved the food. We had a three course meal, followed by cakes and sweets made by friends and family. The cake table was one of my favourite things and no one could believe that none of it was bought from a bakery.”

For handmade details, Nicola says “We hand stamped all the name cards and printed all of the invitations and menus at home. We also printed the table seating plans and used old photos of our parents to add a personal touch. I also stamped labels for everything and used brown twine to tie them. I bought little bottles, filled them with insect repellent and stamped tags for them.David and I were in Sydney in January and we came across fortune scratchie cards in little brown envelopes. They matched our theme and were a great conversation starter for the tables. They also doubled as name cards and were clipped to the menus with little wooden pegs.”

The first dance was a little spontaneous and absolutely perfect. Nicola recalls “Our first dance was to ‘My Funny Valentine’. Our musician’s equipment was set up in the dining room and we wanted our first dance in the front room. After a little convincing, they were kind enough to sing our song acoustic, and our saxophone player found a piano to play along! It couldn’t have been more beautiful, and it was the first time throughout the day that I was brought to tears. ”

Jacqueline and Ricky

On the eve of St Patrick’s Day, I thought we’d take a little spin across the oceans and devour this incredible Irish wedding! The landscape and architecture are so beautifully Irish and a beautiful way to lead into one of the happiest cultural days of the year!

Jacqueline recalls how she met her husband. “Ricky and I met when out with mutual friends at a fundraiser 6 years ago, and as much as he would deny it, he pursued me until I agreed to go on a date (ok, so the story varies depending on whose side you are listening to, however it’s the writer’s privilege to give their perspective of events).

Surprisingly Ricky managed to keep his planned proposal very much a secret, the reason I say surprisingly is that he showed the ring to my folks when he paid a nerve-wracking visit a few days previous  to ask their permission! While Ricky can be secretive, my parents must have struggled with keeping the impending proposal to themselves! Luckily they only had 2 days to wait before the news broke. Ricky suggested we walk on Portmarnock beach that morning with our dog Millie, it was a lovely Sunday summer’s morning so I suspected nothing. As soon as we arrived  our dog went wild whilst she waited on the ball to be thrown into the sea…Ricky got anxious that the ring sitting in his shorts pocket might not be long escaping and so within minutes of starting out he was down on one knee. The tide was in, which meant it was a little tighter than normal for Sunday walkers… so you can imagine the applause and cheers from passersby!”

Photos today are by Solas Photographers. Aren’t they splendid? They capture the moodiness of Ireland and the happiness of the day so beautifully.

Jacqueline and Ricky held their ceremony and reception at  Ballymagarvey Village. Jacqueline says “Ballymagarvey ticked so many boxes that I knew it was the place for us and the guests were not disappointed on the day.”

The highlight of the day was the early morning quiet. Jacqueline recalls “My favourite moment was the wind down the night before and morning of the wedding. I was exhausted due to 10 weeks of very, very late nights (spent browsing the internet to source suppliers) and early starts with baby. I loved the casual care-free atmosphere in Ballymagarvey house whilst everyone had their hair and makeup done (including aunts and sister-in-laws). It was a special time being with my nearest and dearest. Family passed through the drawing room where we were getting ready as they checked in for the night and it was just so casual and personal – I loved it.” Jacqueline and her bridesmaid’s hair was styled by Ciara Cumiskey.

Jacqueline wore a wedding dress and shoes from Ciara Bridal. The floral arrangements were styled by Mark Grehan Weddings Flowers.

Barry Macgrath played Jacqueline down the aisle and played the ceremony tunes.

Ricky’s friends sent the couple off with one special touch. Jacqueline explains, “Those aren’t swords you may have noticed. Ricky is very proud of his auctioneering business and the day just could not pass without symbolising this, so as we left the ceremony his close friends held gavels aloft which meant a lot to him.”

Of their photographers, Jacqueline says “James was a lot of fun, professional and didn’t intrude in our day. ”

The bridal party consisted of the couple’s closest friends and family. Jacqueline’s bridesmaids wore gowns they’d found on holiday in Spain. Ricky and his groomsmen wore suits from Aston Formal Wear.

The wedding stationery was created by Rachel Koo and the sweet wedding cake by Creative Cakes.

The Sweet Treat Co. created a colourful sweet table.  Jacqueline notes “They made an appearance in Ballymagarvey creating quite the display of old favourites (check out the Macaroon bars).”

The bride had one more surprise for the guests! Jacqueline recalls, “Whilst everyone was being seated for the meal I snuck in Manila Rhythm so I surprised everyone by having them play as we entered for our meal and then proceeded to play for two hours – they were a huge hit and a tip to other bride and grooms is stretch the budget to have these guys. They had everyone up dancing during the meal so I knew our evening was off to a great start.”

Whitney and Rick

A wedding with an Aussie and an American, planned in three weeks, a surprise, homemade, heartfelt, beautiful. These are only some of the words I could use to describe the wedding of Whitney and Rick, but their story? It tells oh so much more.

Whitney tells the tale of how she and Rick met, “There is a special story and it’s a long one.  Here’s the short version:  Rick and I met in July 2007 when he was in Louisville to play an Australian Rules Football game.  He was living in Tennessee at the time for work.  We chatted a bit and I was quite smitten with him.  I played it cool and asked him to be my friend on myspace 4 months later.  We wrote back and forth and got to know each other.  Then Rick came back to the US again for work and we finally had our chance to date.  When he had to move back to Tasmania I followed my heart and moved a few months later.  The rest is history!”

Whitney and Rick pulled everything together quickly. “From the day we got engaged, we had 3 weeks to plan this wedding.  I immediately starting looking for inspiration online.  I love second-hand and antique shops so I immediately started collecting little things here and there.  My niece, Chase, made origami fortune tellers with beautiful colored paper.  Rick made me one at our 1st anniversary dinner and I thought it was so cute, so Chase wanted to make them for our wedding day.” Whitney chose an Isabella Faye gown from Timeless Elegance in Launceston, Tasmania. She paired it with a sash from David’s Bridal  and  Stuart Weitzman shoes.

The entire wedding was a surprise. Whitney explains “The wedding was disguised as an engagement party, so it was a very fun surprise.  Rick and I got engaged in June and decided to marry while we were traveling through the US…in 4 weeks!  It was hectic but great getting everything together from the other side of the world.  My parents, sister, and 2 best friends knew about the wedding, but everyone else thought it was an engagement party (except for the suspicious few).  I’m not sure how it all came together in the end, but it was such a perfect day.  Little things went wrong, like losing the special white pen for the guest book and the guests arriving while I was still setting up, but you just have to let those things go and enjoy every second of it – it goes by so fast!!! ” Whitney’s hair and makeup was styled by Tiffany Hampton at Joseph’s Salon.

The flowers were put together by friends, save for a few special arrangements, Whitney explains “We bought most of the flowers at a wholesale florists and my friends arranged them in vases and tins I bought at second-hand and antique shops.  My bouquet, Rick’s boutonniere, and the arrangement in the entry hall are from All Seasons Florist in Morehead, Kentucky.”

Whitney says ” I loved surprising my best friends as they came up the stairs, one by one, to find me in my wedding dress.  Their reactions were priceless and so special to me. “

Whitney and Rick held their ceremony and reception at The Hunt Morgan House. Whitney says “The Hunt Morgan House is an historic home in downtown Lexington.  The house had a beautiful garden and we had access to the inside as well which was already decorated with lovely antiques.”

Whitney walked down the aisle to a song suggested by Rick’s sister, Whitney explains. ” I chose “The One You Love” by Passenger featuring Kate Miller Heidke.  Rick’s sister Jen was able to make it to our wedding, much to our surprise and delight, and she introduced us to this song a few days before the wedding.  We loved it!  We knew it was the perfect song for us.”. Rick wore a suit from Studio Italia and shoes from Julius Marlow.

A family surprise meant even more to the couple, says Whitney. “Rick’s mom, dad, and sister were able to travel to the wedding with such short notice.  And Rick’s dad married us.”

There were even last minute vows. Whitney recalls “I loved writing our own vows.  We wrote them 30 minutes before guests started to arrive.  I locked us in a room where no one could find us and we just sat and wrote. They came so easily.  Writing our vows together and reciting them in that room together was very special to us both.”

Guests were served appropriate beverages as they soaked in the wedding celebrations. Whitney explains “I really wanted to have details from Kentucky and Australia.  I had a few maps around because everyone always asked me where Tasmania was.  We had a ginger ale from Kentucky, Ale8one, and Bundaberg ginger beer from Australia.”

Of their photographer, Whitney says “Jessica was amazing.  We wanted someone to capture the emotions of the evening – the surprise, being reunited with friends and family after being away for almost a year, the ceremony, etc.  Jessica did an amazing job at capturing this.  She only took us away for a few minutes to get some posed photos and spent the rest of the time taking the candid shots we hoped for.”

Whitney and Rick served delicious cupcakes on a cupcake table  from Gigi’s Cupcakes in Lexington, Kentucky.   The rest of the event was catered by DaRae and Friends Catering . Whitney remarks “They are amazing!  The food is always delicious, they do a fantastic job decorating their tables, and the service is spot-on.  “

The favors were carried from Australia. Whitney explains “We had little jars of leatherwood honey from The Tasmanian Honey Company and tea from The Art of Tea in Kingston, Tasmania.  We carried these all the way from Tasmania to Kentucky in our luggage but it was well worth the extra weight.  They made great favours and it was nice to have something from Rick’s hometown.”

Whitney and Rick stayed simple with their decorations. Whitney remarks “We bought a Polaroid camera so people could take their photos to include in the guest book.  I love flowers and lots of color, so I just made sure there were flowers everywhere.  Nothing formal or fancy, just bright, beautiful flowers.”

The first dance was intimate and special. Whitney says “We danced to I Like the Way You Hung the Moon by Drew Holcombe and the Neighbours.  We danced in the garden, nothing too formal.”

Megan & Justin

A Cape Cod wedding conjures up such romantic images in my mind- being so exposed to American culture, today’s exquisite wedding is none of those things. It’s so much more. Megan and Justin’s beautiful Cape Cod wedding was a week long celebration that had their friends and family pitching in during the day, and catching up together at night. It stayed true to their personal way of living, but also added a strength to the relationships with their loved ones.

Megan recalls how they met. “Justin and I met in Boston while we were both working at Partners In Health, which is a non-profit organization that provides health care in developing countries.  Our first date was two days after I had run a marathon, and Justin had to premedicate me with horse-pill-sized pain relievers just so I could muster up the strength to leave my desk.”

Megan and Justin hired a beautiful Cape Cod house for their wedding. Megan explains “Overbrook House is an old, rambling estate with nine bedrooms located on 20 acres of organic farmland.  We rented the house for a week so we could have a ‘base of operations’ for friends and family who were flying to Massachusetts from all over the world.  It’s right on Buzzard’s Bay, and there is also a pool, jogging paths, and a dance hall – it was the perfect low-key yet beautiful place where we could host the rehearsal, ceremony and reception.”

The wedding was made special because of the friends and family who lent a hand. Megan recalls “We honestly owe our lives to our friends and family for making our wedding possible.  My mother made our save-the-date postcards and Justin built a wedding website for us that we used instead of paper invitations.  My father baked our cupcakes and multiple friends pitched in with the endless frosting of them.  Everyone was so generous with their time and energy – from setting out chairs to making sangria, from washing dishes to singing during our ceremony.  Our wedding was truly a labor of love, and we feel so lucky to have such wonderfully generous and kind people in our lives.”

Justin wore a suit from Indochino and shoes from Cole Haan.

Megan wore a wedding gown from Saja. Megan’s friend & sister styled her hair and makeup and her friend Laura Szabo-Kubitz designed and made Megan’s jewels.

Megan and Justin made sure that their guests were accommodated every step of the way. Megan recalls, “Because so many people were coming from out of town, we wanted to create time for them to explore the area.  We purposefully had our ceremony late in the day on Saturday so that people could rent bicycles, sight see or travel around Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.  Later, I loved hearing about all the different adventures our guests had on their own.”

Megan and Justin both walked down the aisle to a song with much meaning to the couple. “We both walked down the aisle to “Sprawl II” by Arcade Fire.  The female lead singer of Arcade Fire is from Haiti, and the group has been very generous to Partners In Health, the NGO where Justin and I met.  We love the band, and that particular song has lyrics with which Justin and I both identify.”

Megan says “I loved having my friends and family so intimately involved with making the wedding a success.  I love that my father baked 150 cupcakes for us.  I love that my grandmother hand-sewed a wedding quilt for us that served as a backdrop for our ceremony.  I love that our Dominican and French friends worked together to decorate the dance hall.  We really could not have done it without all of our friends and family.” Friends of the couple Katie Mies, David Deminico and John Mleziva played music during the ceremony.

The couple were married by Megan’s brother Jacob.

Megan and Justin made sure the wedding reflected who they were. Megan states, “Every detail, from our rings to the music to the food, perfectly defined us.  If some conventional wedding tradition didn’t make sense to us, we just didn’t do it.  It was very liberating not to have to worry about little details like bridesmaid dresses or hair appointments or wedding programs.  The best compliment we received all weekend was from people saying, “This wedding is very *you*.””

The event was catered by Gourmet Goddess  who focused on organic produce. Megan says “The most important parts of our wedding were, for us, the food and the music.  So we spent a little extra time and care on those things – our food was all organic and locally purchased, and Justin painstakingly put together every playlist for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.  And, if I do say so myself, we had a pretty rocking dance party.”

Of their photographer Megan recalls, “Christian was amazing.  From viewing his portfolio online, I knew he was extremely talented, and a wonderful storyteller.  We didn’t want any posed pictures because they always looked very unnatural and forced to us, so his photo-journalistic style was just what we were looking for.  Christian and his wife flew up to Massachusetts to spend almost an entire week with us – we went to a Red Sox game together, and they came to Overbrook House for dinner every night.  They fit in so well that everyone at the wedding assumed we were old friends.  And now we are. ”

Megan’s mother made the stationery, including the menus. She also styled the floral arrangements. Party Cape Cod provided the rentals.

Megan says “Our wedding was a celebration of love that was only possible through the incredible generosity and support of our amazing family and friends.”

Megan recalls “Justin and I have, at one time or another, lived in Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Wisconsin and the Dominican Republic, so we had friends and family coming from all over the world.  It was very important to us that we spend a lot of time with all our guests, and also that there were ample opportunities for people from various parts of our lives to meet each other.  Renting Overbrook House for a whole week really helped facilitate that, as did planning little events like going to a Red Sox game, hosting a clambake, and showing an outdoor movie.”

One final special touch? Megan recalls “In lieu of gifts, we asked for donations to be made to the organizations Health Horizons International , Partners In Health, and the National MS Society ”
