This tutorial shows you how to make a fabric covered dress hanger for your bridal gown or as a pretty gift for your bridesmaids.

A few words about dress hangers first: Gowns can be very heavy, so unless your beauty comes on a special reinforced gown hanger, I suggest to use a solid high quality wooden hanger. Cheap plastic hangers are not durable enough and can break easily even if your dress is very lightweight (trust me on this!), and the last thing you want on your wedding day is a ruined DIY project after you invested so much work and love into making it.

This project takes approximately one hour and you will need:

  •  a dress hanger
  •  a fat quarter of floral fabric
  •  hot glue gun
  •  fabric scissors
  •  a pretty enamel brooch (or rhinestone or any other kind of embellishment)

You can use any fabric you like, but I recommend natural fibers such as cotton or linen. Polyester and satin melt easily when they get in contact with hot glue and that can cause severe burns. Burlap and lace might work as well, but you have to be extremely cautious with the hot glue.

Step 1.

Start by cutting your fabric into circles. If you do not own a circle cutter there is no need to buy one. Cut squares instead and then simply round the edges of each square to get a circle-like shape. It does not have to be perfect because the shape will not be noticeable afterwards. You will need a total of approximately 40 circles with a diameter of 7-10 cm each, and three or four circles twice the size for the large flower in the middle.

Step 2.

Lay two circles on top of each other, apply a small dab of hot glue to the center of the upper circle, then crunch the center. This will create a flower-like shape.

Step 3.

Next, apply a  dab of hot glue to the bottom of the flower and press it onto the dress hanger.

Step 4.

Let the glue cool for a moment, then glue another flower right next to the first one. Repeat until the dress hanger is covered completely.

Step 4.

Lastly, glue or pin the brooch to the center of the large flower.

Aside from weddings and events I love my husband (of course!), our crazy parakeets, photography, travel, the beach and all things turquoise.”
