Following on from the first in our industrial wedding venue series (with Melbourne!) We’re heading north today and exploring Sydney! The lovely Ms Herringbone and I have been scouring to find the best industrial style Sydney wedding venues. Blank canvases with plenty of character they set the scene for an urban industrial wedding.

Cell Block Theatre

CellBlockInteriorWeb

Located at the National Art School, Cell Block Theatre can accommodate 120 guests for banquet dining or 240 guests for cocktail functions. Full of history, the building retains the original sandstone walls, showing the patina of old cells and curved staircases.

Featuring solid iron doorways, exposed brickwork and simple wooden floors the sense of history with Cell Block Theatre is grand and the features of the building strong, as they shine through.

The Richard Wherrett Studio

The Richard Wherrett Studio encapsulates the romance of Sydney Theatre and its heritage. Located in the original Sydney Theatre complex at Walsh Bay and featuring  rustic brickwork, exposed iron bark beams and enormously high ceilings The Richard Wherrett Studio can seat 110 for dinner or 200 for cocktail functions.

Bangarra Dance Theatre

Bangarra Dance Theatre is just one of the spaces at Sydney’s many heritage listed wharves. Location at the harbour end of Pier 4/4 the wharf dates back to the early 1800’s and Bangarra’s restoration adds a modern edge to the historic charm. The Bangarra room can seat 80 guests or 150 for cocktails. Also available is the Theatre room, accommodating up to 350 and the Studio, accommodating up to 300. The rooms show a variety of finishes – polished concrete, exposed steel, mirrored walls. All of which add to the industrial feel.

Luxe Studios

Luxe Studios and Productions

Luxe Studios sets the scene for a modern celebration. As photographic and production studios, there is plenty of space and room to truly make it your own. With six studio spaces featuring white walls, exposed ceilings and polished cement floors, they provide just the right blank canvas for a function.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

cargo hall

Located right in Sydney’s hub, the Overseas Passenger Terminal is filled with industrial style spaces. Our pick? The Cargo Hall. With floor to ceiling glass windows, the cement flooring and exposed steel beams. It lends itself to your interpretation of industrial and anything in between. The Cargo Hall can seat up to 550 guests or 1000 for cocktail style functions.

Pyd Warehouse

sydney warehouse function venue

I am a sucker for an incredible warehouse space and it seems Pyd Warehouse might just deliver that! It an cater for between 300-500 guests depending on your use of the space and with exposed steel beams and concrete floor lends itself perfectly to the industrial style. The warehouse has three spaces- the Atrium, the Warehouse and the more ornate Country Trader (my favourite) filled with antiques and chandeliers but still keeping the industrial bare bones.

Turbine Shop – Cockatoo Island

KIDZOOM_turbine

I’m not sure you can get much more industrial than Cockatoo Island and Turbine Shop . Allowing outside caterers, Turbine Shop is the largest shed on the island exposing every element of it’s steel structure. The capacity is a whopping 1750 m² so it’s a brilliant choice for huge weddings.  There are also gorgeous areas on the island for your wedding ceremony.

Flying Fish

flying fish

If you want the industrial feel. but still want the convenience of a restaurant style venue then Flying Fish is our favourite restaurant option. The capacity ranges from 140 for seated dinner to 199 for a cocktail function. I love Flying Fish because located on Jones Bay Wharf, it really lends itself to a waterside, industrial style wedding celebrating the maritime history of the original building. The steel and cement compliments the decor of the restaurant with the Harbour Bridge making a beautiful backdrop.

Simmer On The Bay

simmer on the bay

Another restaurant option, Simmer On the Bay lends itself to clean, industrial styling. With its wharf location and exposed beams, and cement walls it’s waterside, it’s industrial and it’s your blank canvas. The venue can accommodate 100-350 guests and with its reputation for great events, has a dedicated events team in house for your wedding.

Mclemoi Gallery

MCLEMOI VENUE

Mclemoi Gallery taps into my love of using art galleries for weddings! Perfect for a cocktail style function the venue can hold 200 guests and while guests celebrate amongst the latest collection you can dance the night away amongst the crisp white walls and cement flooring.

Fairground Follies

fairground follies

Industrial with a twist – a museum full of carnival memorabilia Fairground Follies has to be one of Sydney’s quirkiest venues and I couldn’t resist adding it to our list! Bare bones but filled to the brim with touches like a canopy of 1000 fairy lights and flexible themeing, the venue can seat 200 or 1000 for cocktail functions.

Sadly, Sun Studios don’t do weddings anymore. I tried them in Feb when I first got enqaged and again after your article and they aren’t taking wedding bookings and are somewhat vague about whether this will change. Pretty bummed really as it’s a stunning venue 🙁

Studio twenty4 has recently been converted into offices, which is also a shame because as it would of been a great space also..

        Hi Ben,

Unfortunately the space has now been leased full time, we did manage to have a 600+ event there back in November for underground cinema.

Good luck with your search, I think the biggest challenge you will find is adequate ventilation if you need to cook on site and having suitable toilets.

Jason, Did you ever end up transforming your workshop into an event venue? My daughter organises events for her employer and is looking for a large warehouse type space at the moment in Sydney. Maria
