Foxglove Lettering is a boutique lettering and design studio run by the talented, and equally lovely Carla Hackett. This busy lady hand-crafts lettering for a range of clients in creative industries, including fashion, music, food, branding, retail, hospitality, magazines, books, weddings and conferences. I have a soft-spot for typography, and Carla’s work always has me swooning, and wishing my scratchy handwriting was capable of looking so fabulous. But of course, THAT is why she is the professional!

Carla was generous enough to share her time with us today, providing some fantastic insight into her creative journey, and the bespoke beauty that she creates.

What was your path to crafting handmade items?

I was once a graphic designer and I was so excited to discover my passion for lettering as it was the perfect combination of using my hands and typographic nerdery! The ephemeral nature of chalk really appealed to me as it’s impermanent and rustic, plus it suits the vintage typography styles I love.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere! I love finding old Ghost Signs around Melbourne from another era. My travels around Europe were amazing for stumbling across hand painted signs, street signs and neon. My coveted item in my possession is a lettering book from 1965 that someone like Don Draper would have used to order his headlines! There are some fantastic brush script references in there. Oh and of course the magical internet with some fantastic lettering blogs, Pinterest and Instagram is great for following fellow creative types and seeing behind the scenes.

When I came across this store I gasped out loud! Not just a vintage dress, but one with LOTS OF CATS on it. This will complete my transformation into crazy letterer/cat lady.
