Sarah and Jason

Backyard, at home weddings are always a special kind of wedding- there’s a sense of connectedness not only to each other but to the surroundings and there’s something about going back to the spot you were married in bare feet with a cup of coffee and remembering something so life changing. Beautiful photographs today by White Tulip Photography.

Sarah tells their story. “I was friends with Jason’s older sister for about 5 years before meeting Jason at a party. We went our separate ways but kept in touch on Facebook and ended up getting together a few months later. ”

Sarah chose a Alfred Angelo wedding dress from The Gown Gallery, while her bridesmaids wore gowns in different shades of red from Review. Sarah remarks, “I wore a birdcage veil and a big flower made from silk dupion, both of which I made myself.”

The ceremony processional was sung by friends, Sarah remembering, “We walked down the aisle to two of our friends singing an acoustic version of John Williamson’s Chandelier of Stars, which was absolutely beautiful and had me in tears.” The couple were married in Sarah’s parent’s backyard.

The ceremony had it’s own memorable moments, says Sarah. “The day went so fast it was all a huge blur! I think my favorite moments would be hearing the music as I was walking down the aisle and realizing that I was actually getting married, the moment the celebrant asked one of our friends to do a speech during the ceremony, and I had forgotten to tell her she would be doing it! With a quick dash to grab her notes she was back and did a beautiful rendition of a speech written for us by our friends in Broome.”

Tysoe Richmond-Cooper performed the ceremony, Sarah remembering, ” Our celebrant Tysoe did an amazing job of integrating our weird and wonderful requests for the ceremony and captured us perfectly!!”

Of their photographer, Sarah remarks, “I’ve always hated posed corny wedding photos, so when I found Mandy with her candid documentary style, through Polka Dot Bride, I was absolutely stoked! When we met with her, it was like meeting with a mate – exactly what you want for someone you’re spending your wedding day with!! I’m absolutely in love with our wedding photos, I look through them at least once a week. Mandy truly captured our personalities and the relaxed and fun atmosphere of the whole day! ”

A DIY photobooth was the highlight of the night, Sarah remembering, “We had a pin up board set up with twine, pegs and a polaroid camera. I made a heap of moustaches, lips and hats from coloured card to use as props. The board was more successful than I ever thought it would be and I’ll be able to keep it forever to remind me of the awesome fun we had that night.”

Reception celebrations continued under a marquee, decorated by the bride who remarks, “I made bunting and pom poms as I couldn’t decide between them! The main decorations were fairy lights, pom poms (thanks Martha Stewart tutorials) and 25m of colourful bunting I made in Broome. The reception tables were decorated with vintage jars and bottles, filled with flowers from around the house, candles.”

“The whole atmosphere was so warm and friendly, just like a big family BBQ which was exactly what I wanted.”

Sarah remembers, “The reception was a little bit hectic as the chef from the catering company didn’t turn up, but all our wonderful guests chipped in and we ended up with an even better atmosphere! My favorite moment would have to be when we found out the chef wasn’t coming, how overwhelming the response was from everyone to get things done and make sure our night was special and stress-free.”

Sarah tells. “I was a little worried about the best man toast initially due to the best man being a bit of a trouble maker, but his speech was lovely and not at all inappropriate. We also had a speech from one of my bridesmaids, which I asked her to do the day before the wedding and which made me cry all over again, and from Jason’s dad and a quick thank you speech from Jason. The reception was very relaxed and not at all formal, we didn’t have an “entrance” or even sit down together, we everyone just kind of wandered in and sat down as they got hungry!”

The couple had a pink ombre wedding cake, Sarah remembering, ” My sister made the cake for us as our gift. It was a Madeira cake with Marshmallow icing, made in layers of ombre pink with ruffled icing. I made a cake topper with little crochet hearts and bunting with our initials on. Our basic colour scheme was various shades of pink, red and coral and white.”

The first dance was “A stumbling ‘hug and sway’ to Johnny Cash’s ‘If I were a carpenter’.”
