Floral head wreaths are a classic look for flowergirls, bridesmaids and brides alike and they’re actually quite simple (if a little time consuming) to make. They are beautiful for a wedding or garden party and would be a great job for a bridesmaid or keen family member to take on! Before you begin your diy floral head wreath you will need to choose your flowers. In this one I have used a combination of freesias and 2 separate filler flowers. You can choose your fillers according to the look you want. With this wreath, I was going for a wild english garden look and so chose tiny rustic looking flowers and buds combined with the winter gorgeousness of freesias. The flowers you choose will determine the look so make certain you stay within your overall theme. It would be wise to research what will be available at your florist at least a couple of weeks before and even place an order for your flowers to avoid floundering on the day.

You will need:

  • Flowers. 2 bunches of filler flowers and one bunch of feature flower.
  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape
  • Floral scissors

Step 1: Measure the head of the person who will be wearing the wreath using a tape measure or a piece of string. One length of floral wire will not be enough so you will need to join 2 lengths together using floral tape. You will also need to douple up your wire for extra rigidity. Once you have joined your lengths, trim (making sure you trim a little longer than your measurement to allow for joining space) and join with floral tape.

Step 2: Edit you flowers. Take small sprigs of your flowers and strip most of the leaves off. Take 3 or 4 little sprigs and join them together to form little mini bouquets. Secure with floral tape. You will need to make 10-15 of these little bouquets for a child’s head and more for an adult head. Note: I made only every 2nd mini bunch with the freesias as I didn’t want the wreath to be too heavy with them.

Step 3: Once you have made all your little bouquets, it’s time to secure them to your wire form. Make certain you secure them all pointing in the same direction and with the leaves of each bouquet covering the tape of the bouquet before. Work slowly and neatly, trimming your stems as needed so that the wreath doesn’t become too bulky and heavy.

And voila! A beautiful floral head wreath! If you are making this the night before the wedding, you will want to spray it with water and store in a zip lock bag in the fridge until it is needed.
