Kristy of The One Day House

There is a quiet elegance with a thoroughly modern twist to the furniture that Kristy of The One Day House hires out for weddings. The settings are comprised of sofas, tables, chairs, cocktail furniture and rugs all designed to mix with other items to create unique ‘rooms’ tailored to your needs on the day. There are even the smaller items such as crockery and cutlery, cushions, mercury glass, vases – the list goes on and on! Though the items differ in style, they look great teamed with each other in unexpected ways. What you choose and how you choose to combine it, will create a wedding style that is uniquely yours and create the wow factor for your day – truly a ‘One Day House’!

How did you hatch the idea of The One Day House?

I actually started about 8 years ago as a wedding planner. The business grew and evolved over time and The One Day House was just the next step.

Please explain the concept of The One Day House.

The One Day House is all about providing couples with really beautiful furniture and décor rentals so they can create a wedding that looks as good as it feels.

How would you describe the style of The One Day House?

It has a classic and timeless feel but with a bit of a quirky modern edge.

Can we mix and match furniture from the different styles and have it still look cohesive?

It’s quite a mismatched collection but still works together cohesively. When we purchase or commission something to be made to add to the range we always look at its functionality as well as its aesthetic. We always think about how a new addition goes into the family, what it can be paired with or is complimentary to. You really can create so many different styles within the range and I think that’s really important when you want to create a wedding style that is unique and individual.

What do you love about helping a couple choose the furniture and in effect, set the style for the wedding day?

It’s always so exciting for us. We love how different everyone is and how they can sometimes create combinations we would never think of!

Do you offer furniture packages?

We do offer packages and these can be found on our website. However we don’t discount on these because we like to remain flexible and encourage people to create their own sets. They are more there for inspiration.

What (geographical) area can your hire range be delivered to?

We service from the Sunshine Coast all the way down to Byron Bay and in between such as Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba… we’ve even been out to Boonah.

How do couples go about looking at and booking pieces from your range?

First off it’s best to have a really good browse through our online catalogue. It’s so easy to use and everything has been divided into categories so they can easily find tables or seating for example. Then they simply email through a wish list and we can do up a quote based on the available items. If they wish they can then come in to our warehouse and view the range in person. It’s always a lot of fun and we can try out different combinations right there. I love getting rugs and cushions out and creating a couch setting or something like that.

Can these bookings and arrangements be made online?

Absolutely. We work with most of our couples purely over the phone or email.

On delivery, are you able to help style the venue with your furniture?

Our delivery staff are great, we always get such amazing feedback about them and we have an installation service for assistance with set up. We don’t have a styling service as such but often work closely with some of the region’s top stylists.

Do you see certain trends or colours emerging for 2016?

Lots of beautiful bohemian weddings and weddings with a bit of a classic base with a bohemian edge seen through patterns and colours, hanging floral installations and lights. I do see a small trend toward a more corporate style of wedding, very clean and modern. But I think there is an ever enduring beauty of the fine art wedding with a focus on textures and classic style.

How do you ’read’ the incoming trends to ensure that you are prepared & can offer furniture to match?

It is such a subtle process and it’s often one of the most challenging aspects of always making sure the range is up to date and relevant. It’s easy to get swayed by what everyone else is doing as well but as much as possible we try to offer something a little different, a little bit left of centre whilst still keeping it timeless. I do watch what is happening in interior design and take cues from what our favourite stylists ask us for. However when we create something bespoke like our low feasting tables or our bars, I draw inspiration from anything and everything! Sometimes all it takes is something like a herringbone floor and I think wow, let’s make that into the top of a bar.

How do celebrate the end of the working week?

This is usually a Monday for me and since I have two little ones I spend it with them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m pretty creative. I like to make things (mostly for the house) and I paint abstract oil landscapes. I also bought a pottery wheel a year ago and I am enjoying learning very slowly how to use it.

Thank you Kristy for sharing your story.  Gorgeous furniture to set the style of your wedding, at your fingertips! To find out more about The One Day House, visit the website.
