Flower garlands come in all shapes and sizes, and this easy scented flower garland tutorial will give you some tricks to impress your guests! It’s no secret that I love an event filled with blooms, and this garland allows you to literally hang them from every corner!

I’ve used a selection of scented flowers and herbs to give off an incredible aroma. But you could use just about any flower and in any colour, or you could even stick with simple foliage! Hardy herbs such as Rosemary and Thyme will last longer, and the same goes for flowers. However, as this garland is so quick to make, whipping one (or three!) up just before your event should be easy peasy.

What You Will Need:

  • Your chosen flowers – I used Lavender and Rosemary from the garden, plus roses and Easter daisies. Hardier stems will last longer, but you may need a thimble to help push the needle through their stems!
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread
  • Flower snips

What To Do:

Step 1. Prepare your chosen flowers and herbs by cutting them into smaller pieces. If you’re wanting a uniform garland, try to keep all the stems a similar length. Otherwise, a bit of variation creates a lovely unstructured garland. These sprigs were between approximately 6-15cm long. Remove any dead petals or leaves.

Step 2. Thread your needle with your chosen thread, and double it up to create extra strength. Decide on the length you would like, and tie a secure knot at the end. If you’re using heavier herbs or blooms, you may need a heavier twine.

Step 3. Begin to thread the needle through the stems of the flowers, pushing them to the end of your thread. Leave about 10cm clear at the end of the thread. Because the thread is doubled over, you may need to smooth out the thread between flowers as you go.

Step 4. Once you get going, you can decide on a pattern of flowers, or simply thread them on randomly. Vary the height of where the needle threads through the stem for a more relaxed garland. Once you get to the end of the thread, cut the needle out and tie a secure knot. Hang from the roof beams, along a wall, or use to line an aisle!

These garlands can be used in a variety of ways, even after they’re a little wilted from a day decorating the room! Collect all the blooms up and make potpourri, or save the petals for confetti for your next big event!
