It’s always good fun to use something so simple to create an impact on your wedding day, especially when it’s a little old school. Reworking these paper fortune tellers in classic thick card, en masse, gives a geometric and clean centrepiece that can be quite dramatic.

Using black, white and grey textured card, you can make these in any size. You can also leave them blank as a part of a centrepiece, or you can write little quotes (or fortunes!) in them, leaving them on each guest setting. Once you get folding it’ll all come back to you, even if you haven’t made one of these since primary school!

What You Will Need:

  • Thick card. If the card is too thick it will be difficult to fold, so go for a medium weight. Most department stores have packs of square card in a range of colours, perfect for this DIY
  • Scissors or a cutting mat and craft knife
  • Good pen – if you’ll be writing fortunes

Step 1. Ensure that whatever size fortune teller you are making, the card is square. This will create very sharp corners. Fold the card from opposite corner to opposite corner in both directions, making a nice neat fold.

Step 2. Flip the card over. Fold each corner into the centre of the piece of card, being as meticulous as you can be in matching up the lines.

Step 3. Flip the card over. Fold each corner into the centre, again being careful to be neat as you go.

Step 4. Do not flip the card this time, instead, fold the card into a rectangle. Repeat this in the other direction.

Step 5. Slip your fingers into the underneath squares, and voila! You have just created a paper fortune teller, and a gorgeous geometric paper centrepiece for your wedding!

A mass of these paper lanterns spread down the length of the table creates a crisp and geometric effect, perfect for a black tie event. Fill your paper pieces with succulents or blooms, leave them as they are, or write facts about the newlyweds on the inside of them. Have a play around, and you are sure to come up with a design that will impress!
