Lucy & Conor

I don’t know about you, but when I see a wedding so full of colour like Lucy and Conor’s, I come back to it again and again. Because there is no better panacea for endless grey days than the fun and vibrancy of a wedding that embraces bright, bold colour through every moment; from the stained glass window at the church, the bridesmaids’ gowns, the cheery photographs by Figtree Pictures to the confetti-filled balloons that hung at their marquee reception. Bookmark this link folks, because winter days are coming!

It was rum that brought these two together. The happy couple tells, “We met at the Jube Hotel at Ekka time in 2013. We shared a love of rum, who knew that we would share this love for a lifetime!” Conor popped the question on a romantic trip to Spicers Peak Lodge. “It was an unforgettable weekend,” adds Lucy.

Conor and his groomsmen chose pieces from Hugo Boss and Country Road, the groom adding an Akubra after dark. “Because of Con’s love of the country, we decided ‘urban cowboy’ should be the theme for the grooms/groomsmen attire (haha!) The boys wore a light-coloured chino with a white shirt, a checked tie and a jacket with a subtle check,” explains the bride.

The colourful vibes kicked off with the Lucy’s bridesmaids donning vivid gowns by Mara Hoffman. The bride herself chose a chic ball gown designed by One Day Bridal from Sphere Collective. “The ‘Middleton’ was one of the first dresses I had seen however there were no stockists in Brisbane. It so happened that the weekend I tried on dresses at Sphere Collective, there was a trunk show with a collection of One Day Bridal dresses including the Middleton…it was meant to be!”

Kate Dawes Flower Design completely met the match of the bride’s “fun and colourful” brief, Lucy remarking, “I had a beautiful bunch of white flowers featuring a lot of greenery. The girls had a colourful bunch of flowers featuring peonies and ranunculus to match their beautiful dresses!”

The bride walked down the aisle with her father to the sounds of Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’. Lucy remembers, “It was very traditional, but when else would I get the chance! My mum also wanted to walk down the aisle but I said it was the one job dad had!”

Lucy and Conor chose Stuartholme Chapel at Stuartholme School for their ceremony, noting, “We had the ceremony at the chapel at Stuartholme School. It is where I grew up and where I went to school so it made for a very special ceremony. We also had Deacon Andrew O’Brien, as well as Father Orm Rush, officiate our marriage, two very important people in our lives!”

Of their photographers, Lucy and Conor can’t speak highly enough. “All of our vendors were absolutely fantastic! They were great in the lead up to and on the day.”

The newlyweds invited guests to a marquee reception at Lucy’s family home. The bride notes, “We chose my family home because it holds a very special place in both of our hearts…it’s also the perfect place for a party!”

The clear marquee was filled with flowers, balloons and kaleidoscopic-toned paper balls by Kate Dawes Flower Design, complemented by special family pieces. “We wanted lots of colour and lots of personal touches. We had a photo of each of our grandparents and our parents on their wedding day on display, which is becoming a tradition in our family!” tells the couple.

Designated guests were welcomed to their seats with an apron and special note. The ‘table captains’ appointed by Lucy and Con, were asked to ensure their surrounding fellow guests made the most of the food, drink and fun of the evening.

The invitations and place cards were adorned with tassels. “We incorporated a tassel style piece in both our invitations as well as our name cards. Our families spent hours making and attaching these…we have kept them all!”

Lucy and Conor kicked off the dancing with Elvis Presley’s ‘The Wonder Of You’, though their guests mistakenly thought an impromptu performance was their actual first dance, much to everyone’s surprise! Lucy explains, “We had an unexpected ‘neighbour’ drop in to the reception and play an impromptu first dance song for us on the double bass he bought. We had never met this ‘neighbour’ and we have not seen him since! We think he heard the noise in the neighbourhood and thought it must be a good party!”

The colour of the day came to life when confetti rained down over the newlyweds! “There is a photo when we are doing our first dance, and we have popped a confetti balloon above us. It perfectly captures what we wanted…fun and colourful!” tell Conor and Lucy.

Castle and Crown Films captured all the magic of the day, with all the rainbow hues and confetti on film!

.A big congratulations to you both Lucy and Conor! What a joy it was to share your day. A big thank you to Figtree Pictures for sharing today’s gorgeous images with us!
