‘Every leaf speaks bliss to me. Fluttering from the autumn tree.’

So goes one of the cheerier passages in famed English writer Emily Bronte’s poem Fall, leaves, fall.

It’s the perfect line to fire you up for your autumn wedding, especially as we head into the Autumn Issue here at Polka Dot Groom.

Autumn weddings are in many ways blissful for grooms, especially when it comes to fashion choices.

We have the flexibility of forgoing a jacket for just a shirt, should the weather allow for it, but at the same time, we can embrace the full suit look as winter peeks over the horizon.

My summer wedding was in the low 30s and muggy and, thanks to profuse perspiration, my suit was a little worse for wear by the end of the day. I was dreaming of that comfortable autumn weather. Marcus Ning, Oscar Hunt’s brand and marketing manager, describes autumn as “a decent time for grooms” to explore their options.

“Grooms should aim for designs and fabrics that best complement the season – for instance, opting for double-breasted or three-piece suits,” he says. “Meanwhile, seasonal fabrics such as flannels are beautiful for weddings.” Marcus highlights Oscar Hunt’s Navy Flannel Suit – an “understated option”, which, when paired with a formal silver tie, can create a “sophisticated and timeless formal look”.

But what to make of the autumn weather? It’s kind of the Goldilocks of seasons, will it be hot, cold or just right? Marcus tells me there are ways grooms can factor in the weather, especially if they’re having their suit tailored. “With made-to-measure tailoring, the design attributes of wedding suits can be uniquely crafted to accommodate for colder weather but remain elegant too.

“An example is a medium grey double-breasted mohair suit. While design is a matter of personal preference, we recommend substituting fashion trends for classic styles that stand the test of time.”

And if you’re still stuck in the starting blocks when it comes to choosing your suit, there’s only one thing you really need to keep in the back of your mind.

“From formal wear to traditional weddings, the most important consideration of a wedding suit is the fit.

We individually craft each wedding suit according to your measurements – this means better ease of movement and without the stuffiness of a suit throughout the most significant day of your life.”

“In autumn, we’d lean towards more sombre colours including midnight navy. Or consider the always classic black tux. Then there’s the charcoal grey suit with subtle windowpane checks. If all else fails, we particularly enjoy the classic black tie ensemble. Try the black dinner suit in mohair with a crisp white dinner shirt, and polished black oxford from Cordwainer.”
