Your choice of jewellery should be as personal and special as your choice of wedding dress. Or husband for that matter. There is a lot more to accessorising on your wedding day than picking a veil and tiara. Not sure where to start? We’ve put together our top tips to help you add some glitz and glam to your wedding day look.

Pick your metal

It is important to find jewellery that you will cherish on your wedding day. Every bride will have a different look and style. If you’re unsure what type of jewellery to choose for the big day, your skin tone can help narrow this down. A piece of jewellery will look different on every person. There are many reasons for this. One of the biggest factors is skin tone. Finding a piece of jewellery that matches your skin tone can help complement and enhance your natural features.

To work out your skin tone simply look at an area of your skin where your veins are noticeable.  For most people, their wrists are usually a good choice. If your veins show through as blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone. If your veins show through as green, you have a warm skin tone. If your veins appear blue in some areas and green in others, you have a neutral skin tone. It’s as simple as that.

People with cool skin tones tend to suit white metals such as white gold, platinum and silver. To contrast this, people with warm skin tones look good in yellow, rose gold, copper or brass jewellery. If you have a neutral skin tone, you’ll look good in both white metals and yellow metals. Easy right?

However, when it comes to your wedding day, the only thing that really matters is that you love what you’re wearing. So if you want to throw caution to the wind and match your warm skin tone to that a delicate silver necklace, you go for it!

Go classic with pearls

If picking the colour of your jewellery was a hard choice, it’s now time for the added extras. Then again, if the thought of sifting through gemstones to find the perfect colour for your wedding day is a step too far, look no further than the classic pearl. Once only adorning the necks of royalty and the upper class, pearls have been associated with bridal jewellery and special occasions for a long time. For some they are the embodiment of purity, fitting for a wedding day. However, be warned, for others wearing pearls on your wedding day can be a sign of the tears and sorrow to come. But if you’re not superstitious, then pearls can add a touch of old school glamour to a classic white dress.

Think head to toe

There’s no reason why the sparkle should stop with earrings and a necklace. It is your wedding day after all! If you’re wearing a midi-length dress, sari or even a full length with a leg-revealing split why not add some pizazz to your ankles and feet. Anklets draw the eye down. And of course, no bridal sari is complete without an anklet.

To some of you out there, the term anklet might bring you back to the ’90s, where crimped hair and jelly shoes were all the range. But bear with me. Anklets have a long and beautiful history tracing back some 4,500 years ago.

From being used as a symbol of fortune in Ancient Egypt to signifying your marital status in ancient India, their significance varies from place to place. Precious and intricate anklets are now an integral part of Indian bridal ensembles along with traditional sari and a plethora of other precious jewellery. Most recently anklets swept America in the ‘70s and became a staple of free-spirited ladies searching for freedom everywhere making them important components of bohemian style.

If anklets are a bit too out of the realm of traditional then there are always sparkly shoes. Remember your accessories can be a way to reflect your personality. Embellished shoes, satin shoes, lace shoes, painted custom shoes. Who says your shoes even have to be white? Your wedding, your rules.

Shine bright like a diamond

Accessorising shouldn’t stop with jewellery. Quick and effective makeup tricks can help you radiate and glisten on your big day. Now hear us out. When we say glistening skin, we’re not talking about festival-style, all out shine. We’re thinking of an Instagram-worthy Jennifer Lopez glow.
