Monica & Scott

We’re showing off every city across Oz this month and today we’re in beautiful sunny Brisbane for the urban industrial wedding of Monica & Scott.

Captured by Gabriel Veit, this was a day that truly embraced its city setting. With all the modern, industrial vibes of The Lushington. Monica and Scott filled their wedding with deep, jewel tones, beautiful details and plenty of delicious food. It completely embraced its setting, its season and of course, the stars of the show – Monica & Scott themselves!

An evening on a dance floor bought these two together, we learn as we hand this story over to beautiful bride Monica. “Scott and I met on a dance-floor at a bar in Brisbane. So romantic!
Actually what was surprising of our meeting story was that we both realised we came from the same home town (Mackay), and actually knew of each other’s families – but not each other! I was lucky enough to run into him while he was in Brisbane for one night.”

A random night after work, led Scott to pop the big question. “Scott called me one afternoon at work and requested we go out for some Friday night drinks and dinner. He chose my favourite easy and fun dinner date place – our local ‘eat street’ market. He picked me up after work and handed me a rose, which was so lovely but something he does now and then so didn’t raise any suspicion. We had drinks with the sunset over the river and great eats. We then went home, hand in hand, and when I walked into our apartment, he had bunches of my favourite flower – peonies – around the apartment. I turned around in bewilderment, and he was on one knee.”

Monica’s wedding day look began with some very special accessories. “I wore a pearl bracelet that my sister wore on her wedding day. I was also gifted an antique fabric horseshoe which has been handed down through our family with each wedding.”

The bride wore a romantic long sleeve wedding gown designed by Dreamers & Lovers. “I found the dresses I tried on locally to be too traditional, and structured” she explains. “I wanted a dress that was comfortable, classic, easy to wear and had a bohemian air to it.”

Monica and Scott were lucky to have a lot of help from the groom’s aunt & uncle with their flowers and styling – they own floral styling business Always Fabulous Flowers. Monica explained “Scott’s aunt and uncle have been in the florist industry for years, so we were really privileged to have them help us out. His aunt helped design the flower theme, which was ‘rustic – winter’. Lots of dark greens, greys, and whites with pops of maroon. They created the most beautiful bouquets I have ever seen.”

One of Monica’s favourite memories unfolded on the way to the ceremony. “I loved holding my dad’s hand in the car to the ceremony. It was really special to have him there, keeping me steady and calming my anxieties.”

City venue The Lushington set the scene for the day, Monica sharing “We chose the Lushington as we really wanted a warehouse-y, rustic feel close to the city centre, as most of our guests travelled to be there. The Lushington was spot on!
Another reason why is because we were looking for a venue that was a blank canvas for us to make our own, as Scott’s aunt is a florist in the industry (Always Fabulous Flowers) and has many contacts. She helped us design the layout and all of the interior decorations, and furniture, from her friends in the business. We were really lucky.”

Monica walked down the aisle with her father to the sounds of “Beyond” by Leon Bridges.

Monica & Scott wanted to ensure their family was included. “We really wanted Scott’s grandmother to be part of the wedding, so we had her be a witness on our marriage certificate. We also really wanted Scott’s sister to have a part in the wedding, and she read out the reading.”

Ash Crowe officiated proceedings. “I really wanted our ceremony to be short, sweet and meaningful. We only wanted one reading – ‘Union’ by Robert Fulgham, as we thought it was such a beautiful demonstration of what love and marriage is.”

While the newlyweds headed off for photos, they invited guests for a drink. “We did also have one other venue, an ‘in-between’ venue that our guests went to while we were getting photographed. The guests all walked down to one of our favourite bars – Electric Avenue Jr – which we hired out for a couple of hours. We found out later that Electric Avenue had put on a big sign for our guests and had created a tailored cocktail menu dedicated to us! We had no idea. Amazing!”

“Gabe came highly recommended by Scott’s aunt, who is in the wedding industry” tells Monica and Scott of their choice of a photographer. “And she was right! Gabe was so easy, helped us understand what to expect, and took amazing pictures. He really helped us feel like we had everything under control prior to the day and on the day he was fantastic.”

Scott’s favourite wedding day memory? “When we had just finished our photography session (after the ceremony), and the wedding party went to a random tiny local bar on our walk back and asked if they had room for us. They hastily moved some things around and made a space for us in the back, where we had some tequila shots and a beer while we waited for our formal entry into the reception. It was fun, calmed the nerves and was a great moment for us all together. We then made our way back to the reception which was already bouncing by the time we got there.”

Once the photos were done, guests gathered back at The Lushington for an evening cocktail reception the changeover utterly smooth thanks to the couple’s decision to hire wedding planner The Other Bridesmaid. Monica telling “I would really recommend our wedding planner – The Other Bridesmaid. We did not think we would need a wedding planner, however, I am so very glad we had The Other Bridesmaid team on board. They far exceeded expectations and made me feel so carefree on the day. They coordinated our vendors, followed up on any issues and ensured everything went to plan on the day. I cannot recommend them enough.”

To kick off the night of dancing, the newlyweds took to the dance floor to “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green.

Yay! Congratulations Monica & Scott! We so loved sharing your beautiful day. Thank you both and thank you to Gabriel Veit for sharing today’s wedding with us!
