Annie & Penny

In the greyest of seasons, where the sky rarely changes to blue, and sparkle and candlelight become the focal point, Annie & Penny, decided to tie the knot. “We were determined to have a wedding that was ‘us’ and not get caught up in what people think we should do.”

And that it was, both brides donning black, as they walked down the aisle together, exchanged rings (that they had made in Paris!) ditched the first dance, and instead celebrated their day surrounded by friends, family, and plenty of that aforementioned sparkly candlelight. They asked Lauren Campbell to capture their day – just as simple, as beautiful and as love-filled as it was.

In continuing in the “do it your way” style, there was no formal proposal for these two brides, rather, a formal agreement. They explain “Within a week of being together, before same-sex marriage being legalised, we both said to each other if we could marry we would marry each other. There was no formal proposal, just a knowing that we would spend our lives together happy, content and in love.”

Annie and Penny chose the industrial style, multi-use venue The Freedom Hub for their day. “We were looking for an indoor wedding as it was the first day of winter.
We loved the industrial feel of the space and that we were supported by a co-ordinator to assist us. We self-catered the drink and food which was a harvest table. The venue allowed us flexibility with the time of the day and length of our event.”

Each bride carried a different bouquet of blooms, the work of Hunt & Heart Events who also worked to style the event. Annie and Penny share “We were supported by Hunt & Heart Events who provided the flowers, venue set up, the beautiful fairy lights and greenery arbour and sparklers for our departure. We each chose our own flowers both were white with greenery (Annie – peonies, Penny – roses).”

Penny & Annie chose to walk down the aisle together to “Wonderful Tonight” by Vitamin String Quartet.

Annie and Penny were married by Laura Graham. “We were so fortunate with our vendors. Laura Graham (celebrant) was incredible. She met with us and spent time getting to know us and our story and wrote a ceremony that captured us so perfectly. We cried on reading the first draft!

The ceremony was the centre of the event. Beautiful and intimate in a candle filled space surrounded by 70 of our closest family & friends. We only included information that was important to us including the sadness of not having Penny’s parents there nor Annie’s Dad.”

The best part of the ceremony? Exchanging of the rings! The brides noting “A special moment was putting our wedding bands on each other. We were on a holiday in Paris in 2018 and met with a jeweller there who designed our bands for us. It took over 3 months for them to be made and when they arrived they were even more beautiful than we had imagined. The jeweller is Paulette a Bicyclettee (13 rue Paul Bert, Paris).”

Both Penny & Annie loved working with their photographer. “We are so grateful to have met her and for what she provided us with on the day. Apart from images that completely capture how we felt, she was reliable, professional and organised. She understood completely what we were after and she exceeded all expectations.”

That feast? The epic work of Jean Louis Joseph, tell the brides. “The caterer John-Louis Joseph provided the most beautiful harvest table for us that everyone loved, tasted amazing, reasonably priced and looked incredible with the styling.”

Congratulations Annie & Penny! Thank you for sharing your beautiful stories with us. Thank you also to Lauren Campbell for today’s celebration!
