If you’re planning a wedding for 2019, take note. It can feel like there’s a lot of pressure to get everything just perfect for your big day, and wedding flower trends keep changing. First and foremost, it’s important to plan the wedding that you want. Regardless of trends, it needs to be a day you’ll love and look back on fondly for the rest of your life.
But it can be fun to look to current trends and incorporate some ideas into your wedding day to give it a modern feel as well. Flowers are an easy and fun way to do just that. Here are the hottest wedding flower trends to look out for in 2019.
Au naturale
There is a clear movement towards natural looking flowers for both bouquets and decorations. Think a meadow-inspired bouquet of daisies and other small flowers that look like they were hand-picked on the way to the ceremony. And rather than reception flowers being in tight bunches in the centre of the tables, think about stringing them up along walls and posts, and “growing” in arches around entranceways – all in an unstructured way that makes them look like perhaps they just grew there that way.
Softening the industrial vibe
We’ve seen industrial weddings rise in popularity over the past few years: think old mills and factories with high ceilings and big spaces. Raw wood and metal accents provide a similar feel to a barn, but with a more modern, clean edge. Soft floral accents are a great way to complement those straight lines and hard edges. The softer the better here, so you’ll need some white or pastel flowers, or even some ferns or vines hanging from walls, lights or ceiling. Great flowers to use here include peonies, daisies, ranunculus, dahlias and English garden roses.
Bright flowers and greenery

On the flipside of the rustic aesthetic is bright flowers. Although the muted colour palettes haven’t gone away, there is also a resurgence of bright flowers and abundant greenery. Some are embracing all green for their bouquets, while others are choosing a sea of bright colours. Dahlias are tipped to be the flower of 2019 – coming in a range of rich, jewel tones. We’ll see them in bouquets, centrepieces and flower walls. Do keep in mind though that, although they create a wonderful photo wall and focus for a room, a fresh flower wall can set you back thousands of dollars.
A touch of drama
For those who want to create an impact – or perhaps for a more formal or night wedding – you can’t go past deep colours to add a touch of drama to your wedding. We are definitely starting to see more colour making its way into weddings and this is an easy way to do that without making your day look too colourful or overdone. Think deep shades like burgundy, blood red or hunter green – or mix various shades from the same palette to keep things fresh, fun and modern. For real drama, you can’t go past a structurally strong flower such as the classic rose or tulip.
Your grandmother’s garden

Everything old is new again, and we’re seeing a lot of boat-neck gowns thanks to Meghan Markle, which invokes that classic 1950s and 1960s vibe. To complement that look, think about the flowers you would have seen in your grandmother’s garden: snapdragons, charming roses, alstromeria, peony roses, chrysanthemums and daisies. Make sure you have a large, full bouquet and don’t forget to add some greenery such as gum foliage to complete the look.
Large feature flowers

Bouquets don’t have to be uniform or symmetrical. We’re seeing brides moving away from that structured look and into something more natural looking, with one or two ‘feature flowers’ that dominate and add a touch of gravitas to an otherwise lightweight bunch. You might look at including one or two proteas, peony roses, disbud chrysanthemums, or lilies.
You can have a lot of fun creating whatever mood you like with your wedding flowers. Complement your dress and décor or add a touch of fun or drama. Either way, flowers are an economical way to make an impact.
