On the eve of what is set to be another massive year, here’s a countdown of ten of the most memorable celebrity weddings of 2008 (in no particular order) See last year’s countdown here!

1. Ellen and Portia

One of the celebrity weddings of the year! Ellen and Portia wed at home in an intimate ceremony where they sat on floor cushions with friend and author Wayne Dyer. Both were dressed by Zac Posen and feasted on culinary delights including vegan red velvet cake.

2. Guy Sebastian and Jules

The first winner of Australian Idol wed his childhood sweetheart Jules in a Memphis theme wedding in Sydney. Wearing a brown velvet suit, Guy serenaded his bride with her own song during the reception held at Luna park.

3. Carrie and Big

If there was a movie wedding of the year this would have to be it! If you haven’t seen the movie by now look away! The Vivienne Westwood gown, the bird in the hair, the blue shoes and the will they or won’t they live happily ever after?

4. Mariah Carey and Nick

Songstress Mariah Carey wed Nick Cannon in a surprise April wedding in the tropical Bahamian paradise of Eleuthera. Mariah has since tattooed her married name onto her back. The couple designed each other’s wedding rings.

5. Catriona Rowntree and James

Getaway presenter Catriona Rowntree married farmer Ryan in a ceremony outside Geelong in Victoria. Catriona wore an Adam Dixon gown gown and changed into a Tea Rose frock handpainted with blossoms at the marquee reception.

6. Ryan Fitzgerald and Belinda

Ex footballer Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald first came to stardom in Big Brother and then hit the airwaves! Ryan  married his sweetheart Belinda at the Adelaide football oval in March. Blushing bride Belinda wore Alexis George and after a reception featuring a chocolate fountain, guests took to the field for an impromptu barefoot footy match- wedding dress and all!

7. Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z

In a private ceremony, former Destiny’s Child member Beyonce wed long time partner Jay-Z.  It’s rumoured over 50,000 orchids were flown in. Details have been kept from the media but Beyonce reports the wedding was “beautiful inside”.

8. Jenna Bush and Henry

She’s not Australia but boy was there some media surrounding her wedding! Which dress would she pick- where would it be held? Twelve designers were asked to sketch designs for the wedding gown- the winner was Oscar De La Renta.

9. Olivia Newton John and John

It’s a rare Aussie who has not heard Xanadu or even a rare being who has not danced to “You’re The One That I Want” at least once in their lifetime! Aussie singer Olivia Newton John wed fiance John in a private ceremony with just the celebrant present in Peru. The couple later traveled to Florida for a celebration with close family and friends.

10. Jessica Alba and Cash

It certainly was the year for private weddings! A heavily pregnant Jessica Alba wed Cash Warren in a ceremony in the courtyard of the Beverley Hills Court House in May. The bride wore a blue gown and met on the set of Fantastic Four. Jessica was quoted as saying “It wasn’t lust, or ‘this is my soul mate.’ It was, ‘Oh, I’m going to know you for the rest of my life.’ It was easy.” The happy couple are now parents of a little girl – Honor Marie.

11.  Ashlee Simpson and Pete

With all the talk about this wedding I couldn’t not mention it! Ashlee Simpson wed Pete Wentz from band Fall Out Boy at her father’s home in L.A. Sister Jessica was a bridesmaid and the wedding was decorated with over 10,000 black magic roses. Pete’s bulldog Hemingway acted as a ring bearer. The happy couple are now parents of Bronx Mowgli.

12. Jewel and Ty

Singer Jewel wed Ty in a private ceremony at the Cove Atlantis in the Bahamas after a ten year relationship. The bride wore Monique L’huillier and the groom was clad in jeans and cowboy boots.
