Sherrie & Shaun

I love backyard weddings. I’m so sentimental I love the idea of marrying one day and wandering out the next, a cup of tea in hand, to reminisce! Sherri and Shaun celebrated their marriage in their backyard and had such a beautiful day. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Sherrie tells of how they met. “We met through Shaun’s best man whom I was dating at the time. It actually took me a while to warm up to Shaun.”

The fun photographs of today’s celebration are by Something Blue Photography. I love that they capture the intimacy of the day!

Sherrie wore green shoes from BHLDN with her Atelier Rose gown. For her jewels, Sherrie loved “My maid of honour Kirsten Wren lending me her Grandmother’s bracelet.”

Sherrie remarks, “Both the ceremony and reception were held at our home, it made the day even more special and it’s lovely to be able to go into our backyard and reminisce about our wedding.”

Plenty of hard work went into making the space fit for a wedding, Sherrie remembers, “Shaun built the benches for the ceremony and also decorated and fitted out his bar area. He also (along with both our Dads) re-planted our whole garden. I stripped and repainted the chest of drawers that formed part of the ceremony backdrop. We also both spent many days trawling the internet and antique shops looking for the décor.”

Sherrie’s bridesmaids wore colourful knee length gowns from Review.

Sherrie & Shaun hired The Wedding Designer to plan and style the wedding. Sherrie recalls “The backdrop to our ceremony was one of my favourite elements it featured a chest of drawers brimming with coloured glass vases full of flowers and a vintage curtain we found in our travels along with my failed attempt at a ribbon backdrop, The team from the Wedding Designer were able to salvage it and turn it into a real feature.”

Sherrie says “I walked down the aisle to Regina Spektor’s cover of ‘Real Love’.”

“Teresa and our friend Ange Brown recited readings they had chosen themselves during our ceremony. Both ladies did such an amazing job, and both the readings were absolutely beautiful.”

Special details were everywhere, says Sherrie. “Another special detail was the mural in the lounge area that my mum Carmen drew it was such a sweet little touch and is still there to this day. We also both loved the custom banner Jess made for us that contained an inside joke for us and a few of our friends.”

Of their photographers, Sherrie says “Our photographers were Luke and Kathryn from Something Blue Photography. We set our wedding date to fit with their availability as their style of photography was exactly what we wanted. They were super friendly and put us at ease as soon as we met them. We absolutely love how the photos turned out!”

The speeches were a hit! Sherrie explains “The Best Man Perry Hawkins’s speech was fantastic! It was heartfelt and funny, he put so much effort into it that he even made a book- ‘Saturdays with Shaun’ which was a huge crowd pleaser.”

Sherrie remarks “My favourite DIY job was done by Shaun’s mother- Teresa, she re-upholstered a set of lounges we found. It was originally a drab maroon colour that didn’t really fit with our style, Teresa used velvet I found to totally transform the lounges into a beautiful vintage inspired set that takes pride of place in our home.”

The first dance was one filled with laughter, Sherrie recalls  “Our first dance was an opportunity for Shaun and I to catch up with each other as the day is such a whirlwind it was lovely to spend a couple of minutes together dancing to one of our favourite songs.”

In fact, dancing was a highlight of the evening, Sherrie explains “A running joke with our friends is how much Shaun loves the Missy Higgins song – ‘The special two’. During the night one of our guests (whom shall remain nameless) requested this song be played. This resulted in Shaun putting on an impromptu dance performance for me and our friends, it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever experienced.
After Shaun had finished his father Brian decided he would show everyone who the real dancer in the family is and grabbed Teresa to recreate their first dance, to the BeeGees ‘First of May’. It was such a lovely moment watching them dance to their first song and was definitely my favourite part of the reception.”

Congratulations Sherrie & Shaun! Thank you for sharing your day with us! Thank you also to Something Blue Photography for sharing today’s wedding!
