The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings – New Zealand

It’s no secret that New Zealand has some of the world’s most gorgeous scenery – snow-capped mountains and rolling green hills, set against a clear blue sky, make it a must-stop on any traveller’s list. And Peter Jackson, director of all the Tolkien-based films, knew that his home country would be the perfect place to represent idyllic Middle Earth.

Although Middle Earth is dotted throughout the country, one standout feature is Hobbiton itself – the home of Bilbo and Frodo. Visit Matamata to catch a glimpse of this film location. Take a guided tour, feel as tall as Gandalf as you pose outside a Hobbit-hole, and finish the day off with a pint at the Green Dragon Inn. By the way, if you want to eat like a Hobbit on your visit (elevenses, anyone?), New Zealand is home to tantalising cuisine no matter where you travel.

Mamma Mia – Greece

Based on the much-loved musical, this iconic film starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth was gifted with one of the most stunning backdrops in any film we’ve seen recently. The Greek Islands are famed for their turquoise waters, sandy beaches, jagged cliffs and traditional white houses dotted across the skyline, and this location had us completely enthralled while we grooved along to those ABBA hits!

Skiathos and Skopelos are two islands that feature prominently in the film if you want a completely authentic Mamma Mia experience, but with over 2000 islands to choose from on your Greek adventures, you’re pretty much spoiled for choice. Get ready to lose yourself in island time, and enjoy the ancient romance that the Greek Islands have to offer.

James Bond – Monaco

He’s our favourite spy and as smooth as they come – James Bond, originally surfacing on the pages of Ian Fleming’s famous novels (adored by President JFK!), quickly made his way to the big screen. If his adventures weren’t addictive enough in print, the filmmakers had an added advantage in the locations they got to shoot in. Monaco makes our list because it’s just as glamorous as 007 himself.

This tiny principality doesn’t skimp on luxury – from accommodation to the famous Casino Monte Carlo, you’ll be in for the honeymoon or romantic getaway of your dreams if you choose to follow in Mr Bond’s footsteps. Monaco has featured prominently in quite a few of the James Bond films, so if you want to check out a couple before packing your bags we absolutely recommend Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye.

Harry Potter – England

As if we couldn’t love The Boy Who Lived enough (though we also entertain very strong emotions for our beloved Hermione Granger), he calls the ever-fantastic England home. Anglophiles, if you don’t make a Harry Potter experience part of your trip to England, that’ll be ten points from Gryffindor.

You’ll find the Warner Brothers Studios just northwest of London, where the majority of the Harry Potter franchise was filmed. Take a tour and pretend you’re in the wizarding world – sit at the Great Hall’s long dining tables, try on the Sorting Hat, and wander around the castle (watch out for Peeves!).

If you find yourself at King’s Cross Station, do yourself a favour and check out Platform 9¾. Want to see the real-life Hogwarts? Stop off at Northumberland’s Alnwick Castle – the castle’s imposing exterior was used in the first two films, and the stunning gardens featured in Harry’s first Quidditch lesson.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s – the USA

Oh, Holly, don’t we just love you. Make like Audrey Hepburn and George Hepburn with a trip to bustling New York – even if you and your loved one only spend a day or two in this romantic urban hotspot, a taste of the good life is almost certainly a must-do. Another must-do? Visiting the famous Tiffany’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue – Holly chose to eat her breakfast outside these store windows, and gazing upon these shimmering jewels set in classic designs is sure to make your heart sing.

As much as we hate to leave our jewels behind, take a look at some of the other New York destinations seen throughout the film. Central Park and the Empire State Building both make cameos, and are both regularly visited by tourists and locals alike. Many other movies also called the streets of New York home, so any movie-buff couple would be crazy to give this destination a miss.

It’s time to indulge in that movie-star feel – whatever location you choose, we think checking out where your favourite characters (and their film-star counterparts) roamed is a perfect way to while the hours away on your honeymoon or romantic getaway!
