This week for ‘Behind The Door With…’ I visited Preston, Victoria and met a lady with an eye for vintage furniture, Kate Forsyth.  Kate and her husband Dave started Good Day Club in 2014 as they found Victoria to be lacking in large enough amounts of vintage hire furniture for their own wedding.  I’m sure lots of couples like the idea of collecting vintage pieces to style their wedding, but Kate knows it can be harder than it looks. “People often need to see vintage pieces in person” says Kate. “They want to check that they are not on the shabbier side of shabby chic!” I love the idea a wedding ceremony with bright mix matched vintage chairs and adding plush vintage lounges to the wedding reception; Good Day Rentals sure is the place to find it!

Good Day Rentals have a fantastic range of packages and individual hire pieces so you can add a little or a lot of vintage pieces to your wedding. There are rustic wooden trestle tables, elegant chairs, benches, drink trolleys even a copper arch perfect for getting married under!

Kate and Dave started by storing the furniture in their home and quickly began to fill up every room with their vintage finds. “We started looking for a space early this year” says Kate.  “Once we found out I was pregnant, it settled it – we needed more space!” The couple loved the idea of setting up a creative, workshop style space that would also house other creatives, like Kate’s sister who planned to open an art gallery, Melbourne Arts Club. They found the shop through Darebin Council’s Active Spaces program, which helps fill empty shops with artistic endeavours. Kate tells me that it used to be a ski hire shop and that it will only be a short-term, almost pop up space, as it is being knocked down later next year.

Due to the site not quite being a permanent home for Good Day Rentals, the pair had to be very creative and clever with the fit out. Architect Aaron Hughes was brought in to design a fit out that could be taken with the business when they moved and came up with recycling shopping pallets. The space is now light and bright with Kate’s obvious love of colour everywhere you turn. I love the way the vintage chairs are displayed on racks climbing up the wall, it’s very Alice in Wonderland!

Good Day Rentals is open by appointment only, but Kate loves that with a shared space there’s usually someone around to show the furniture to drop in visitors. The space has been used for art exhibitions, parties, hen’s workshops and photoshoots just to name a few. At any one time there might be between seven and fifteen creatives working in the space in the studio, workroom or at the hot desks that they hire out. There’s even a co-worker who reupholsters old furniture which Kate says comes in very handy!

Ms Chinoiserie Says: What a wonderful selection of vintage furniture; love the mis-matched chairs for a ceremony; so much colour and fun!
