It’s a big moment in any man’s life – the moment he decides to ask his lady to be his wife. But, what exactly runs through his head in the lead up? I’ve caught up with some menfolk to spill the beans on their own proposal stories. Today Luke shares with us his plans to propose to Jess over a sunset picnic by the beach.

Planning a proposal is HUGE – what initial ideas did you have about how you would propose?

I had no idea at first. I searched online for inspiration and then I was presented with an opportune moment when Jess posted a photo on Instagram about a sunset beach picnic.

How were you feeling leading up to the big question?

Initially, very calm. But as the time got closer there was some uncertainty that my plans wouldn’t fall into place. I had some friends setting up the picnic for me at a location we had talked about, but they hadn’t found the exact spot… so I wasn’t entirely sure where I was going! I found it harder and harder to wait and keep it from Jess until we had reached the spot I was going to propose.

Fill us in on  all the proposal details – we want to know how it played out, any hiccups along the way, and if she was surprised!

There was one close call the week before. I went to pick the ring up from Carindale and Jess decided to meet me there. I had to basically blow her off which she wasn’t too happy about. Then, on the day of the proposal, we were driving up the hill and I spotted one of my friends standing near the carpark watching for our arrival. Luckily, Jess didn’t see him because that would have made for an interesting conversation!

As we walked around the headland at Cartwright Point, I was hoping that I would be able to spot the picnic setup. I finally saw it and directed her towards the location. Jess saw it and said “Aww this is so cute, I wonder who it’s for?” She had no idea and was oblivious to what would happen next.

Do you have any tips or advice for future grooms planning to propose?

Don’t take it lightly and don’t be lazy. Research and brainstorm until you find something that fits perfectly for you both. Avoid allowing your girlfriend to have any knowledge of you purchasing a ring unless she is absolutely insistent on the type of ring that she wants. The less she knows about anything, the greater the surprise will be! This a moment that every girl dreams of so make sure it’s a memory that they can always look back on and be in awe of your efforts.
