Behind The Door With....Timbermill

I love a beautiful warehouse conversion and this week I’m thrilled to be visiting Timbermill in Sydney’s inner western suburb of Marrickville. Timbermill is a custom furniture and hire business owned by Tom Coles and Sally Taylor. Tom turned his hobby creating timber furniture into the thriving business it is today while Sally, with her design background, perfectly creates the on trend custom pieces and manages the event rental part of the business.

Tom and Sally are lucky enough to have two warehouse spaces across the road from each other. “We opened the workshop about three and a half years ago,” says Sally “and quickly ran out of space!” Now a second space across the road functions as an office, showroom and home of the hire furniture. While the workshop is full of tools, wood and furniture pieces, the showroom is an oasis of calm. Clean white walls, beautiful timber furniture and plants make for a truly inspiring space. Sally tells me it was originally an old car workshop and that they had to do lots of work to create the space they have today. “There was a fair bit of car memorabilia and clutter,” says Sally “and I wanted something light and bright that felt airy and fresh.”

The racks displaying the hire furniture, custom-built for the space, are filled to the brim with beautiful wooden trestle tables, feature bars, chairs and props. I love that the table tops are so beautiful you wouldn’t even need a tablecloth. There’s even twinkly festoon lights and a super cute “get peggy with it” peg board for hire. You could create an entire wedding space just with pieces from Timbermill and it all goes together so beautifully!

The Timbermill showroom has hosted a variety of special events, workshops, launches and even a wedding! There’s a custom-built wooden bar and kitchen in the space as well as a fantastic industrial vibe. Sally tells me that they are so busy that they haven’t been hosting many events lately but that the warehouse will be turning into a party space one night again soon when she and Tom celebrate their engagement.

Sally tells me that Marrickville is the perfect spot as it’s only 15-20 minutes from the city, and being part of an industrial area means they can get many of the things they need locally. I ask Sally what her favourite part of the space is and she tells me she loves the bright, airy office where she works most days and where her two Jack Russell terriers make themselves at home. “It’s great to have a lovely clean space to work in away from the dust of the workshop,” says Sally “I love coming here to work everyday!”
