Choosing your suit can be a daunting task. And it’s no piece of cake to find a style that suits all of your groomsmen either.

Throw in the pressure of staying on trend and sticking to a budget, and you can easily find yourself getting overwhelmed.

But fear not groom-to-be, we’ve chased down some of Australia’s sharpest fashionistas to keep us on point with wedding trends.

Oscar Hunt Tailors General Manager Chris Edwards says grooms are taking more pride in their wedding attire.

“I’d say stylistically, I think guys are more willing to try new things and definitely be a little more adventurous,” he says.

“They’re moving away from traditional suits and playing with different fabrics that are more suitable for the day.”

Chris says many grooms he sees are remaining true to the ‘traditional’ look, but there is room for subtle deviations.

“I don’t think we see too much of a stand-out trend. There is still a lot of traditional dinner suits that we do, but in summer, the suits are light, with wool and colours.

“Country weddings, people opt for more traditional check and tweed.”

Aussie model Sam Wines has also spotted a slight revamp on the traditional suit.

“I think that the ubiquitous trend of relaxed tailoring will continue to grow, and with it, a more relaxed take on the traditional wedding suit,” he says.

“You do want to feel your best on your wedding day, but you also want to be comfortable in what you are wearing, no doubt it’s going to be quite a long day.”

See ya later, tight suit pants – comfort is making a comeback!

But we know that the more casual look isn’t going to be for everyone. Many grooms will still prefer the traditional look – and they will always be on point.

Melbourne Stylist Sally Mackinnon from Styled By Sally says: “a groom and his groomsmen always look great in a three-piece suit”.

“It adds an extra element to the outfit and takes a traditional suit to a new level.”

She found an ally in fellow Melburnian Carl Navé, who has his own tailoring business.

“I love black tie weddings, I think there should be more of them.

“We don’t often have enough reasons to dress up these days and I love a wedding where everyone is dressed up to the nines, and looking super glamorous.”

Carl stressed that there is no ‘wrong’ outfit to wear on your wedding day, after all, “everyone has the right to their own version of a wedding” and warned about being too focused on trends.

“The reason why I do what I do, is so that everyone can look exactly the way they want to look.

“I try to steer clear from fashion trends and rather work with embracing individual style and what generally looks good on the person.

“This ensures longevity of the garment and that you don’t feel like a fashion victim when you look back at your wedding photos in twenty years’ time.”

It’s an important point. Yes, be fashion conscious, but remember being bold can be too brash. Especially when you look back on those photos.
